Groningen

Groningen is a traditional province with medieval churches, typical man-made mounds called ‘terpen’ or ‘wierden’, cosy country pubs, ancient mills and farms.

Groningen

The Groningen terp landscape is one of the oldest man-made landscapes in the northwest of Europe. Some 600 years ago, Groningen was made up of vast swamps and salt marshes that lay boggy and deserted. In order to survive, inhabitants constructed terps, or artificial hills, to protect themselves from the rising water. These pre-date the first dykes, which were constructed in the Middle Ages. At the Wierdenland museum you can find out what it was like for the people who lived here in days gone by, and why Ezinge was also referred to as the Pompeii of the north.

Groningen City is the cultural centre of the north; with its rich seam of architecture, design, theatre and music it has become a flourishing centre for the arts. You can explore the city on foot, by bicycle, by pedal boat and even in a canoe! There are countless eye-catching buildings, and leading architects such as Starck, Koolhaas, and Hejduk have all left their mark here. The Lauwersmeer National Park is a must for watersports enthusiasts, and whether you are sailing, canoeing or surfing, its immense stretches of open water guarantee room to manoeuvre, even in high season. There are plenty of moorings, with four marinas, special jetties and several recreational islands to choose from.
