Flevoland

When you hear that Flevoland is a new, man-made flat polder, you may imagine a dull, desert-like landscape whipped by the west wind, but you couldn’t be more wrong!

In the central region, you’ll discover a country offering a wide range of holiday options, from lively seaside resorts to picturesque villages, idyllic old fishing ports and areas where nature rules.

You will be surprised by the variation in the landscape of Flevoland. Traditional farmhouses with patchworks of fields lie side by side with deep forests, dramatic open spaces and nature reserves thronging with wildlife. The Oostvaardersplassen, for example, is the largest wetland nature reserve in the Netherlands and a paradise for birds. Most of this area is made up of vast lakes and a pristine wetland. Although Flevoland is a new province, the region itself has a long history, and what once was water is now an attractive residential and recreational area with a growing population.

A visit to Schokland brings into focus the age-old Dutch struggle against water. It was evacuated some 150 years ago due to the threat of flooding by the waters of the then Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer). When the northeast polder was drained, Schokland relinquished its status as an island, and now only a raised area remains as a reminder of its unique past, which is traced in the local museum.
