West Flanders
Belgium’s only coastal province with 67 km. of coastline. In the west, the River IJzer meets the sea at Nieuwpoort, while the north is characterised by its flat polders and to the south lie the West Flemish hills.
Farming, fishing and bustling city centres; sea, hills and forest; industry and handicrafts, art and religion, gastronomy and provincial dishes – all are found in abundance in the land of contrasts that is the Westhoek region. The popular seaside town of De Panne is a coastal gem; its beach is the widest on the Flemish Coast and its many attractions are a magnet for visitors in high season. The region of the Leie marries a fascinating industrial heritage with contemporary living. Whether you prefer to cycle or walk, you can look forward to a world of discovery.
Oostende is a cosmopolitan city with a rich past where you can shop to your heart’s content. It boasts a harbour and marina, an international airport, numerous hotels, a casino and busy nightlife. Sights include the Earth Explorer science theme park, three-mast sailing ship, Mercator, Fort Napoleon, the Japanese Garden and James Ensor House. Bruges, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, was classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre in 2000. As you weave your way along winding alleys and over romantic canals, it isn’t difficult to imagine yourself here in medieval times.
