Camping in Normandy - Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings Northern France Campsites with Alan Rogers Travel

June 6th 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast during World War II. The war had a wide reach and affected almost every family in the UK and Europe. The 80th anniversary will be a time of quiet reflection, and many people, from far and wide, will visit the region to retrace ancestors' footsteps, create memories of their own and commemorate those who paid the ultimate price.

Every year, ceremonies are held across Normandy to pay tribute to the achievements and sacrifices of those who fought there in 1944. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the Allied forces used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy.

Rob Fearn, General Manager at Alan Rogers Travel Limited said, “Northern France, and Normany in particular, are always popular destinations. There are a number of scenic and welcoming campsites that will provide a perfect base for tourers wishing to travel to the Normandy shores to pay their respects, learn more about family histories and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.”

Beyond the historical sites, tourers can also take time to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Normandy region. From charming coastal towns to picturesque landscapes, there is much to discover. Sample delectable local cuisine, visit renowned museums, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the locals who have preserved the memory of D-Day for generations.

Suggested campsites:

Flower Camping l’Ile des Trois Rois - France, Normandy, Eure, Les Andelys

One hour from Paris, on the banks of the Seine and overlooked by the impressive remains of Château Gaillard (Richard Coeur de Lion), this attractive and spacious ten-hectare site will appeal to couples and young families. The site offers mobile units to rent and touring pitches in separate areas. These are either riverside or in a large central triangle, all very close to the Seine. After a short walk or cycle along the banks of the Seine, you will be in the quintessential French village of Les Andelys, where you will find a selection of excellent restaurants/bars, shops and a local supermarket.

Château de Lez Eaux -France, Normandy, Manche, Saint Aubin des préaux

Set in the grounds of a château, Castel Camping le Château de Lez Eaux lies in a rural situation just off the main route south, under two hours from Cherbourg. The campsite overlooks Normandy farmland and a small fishing lake. The campsite offers several kinds of camping accommodations and pitches - from treehouses to mobile homes with jacuzzis and chalets to camping pitches for tents, caravans, and mobile homes. Activities include a tropical-themed indoor water park with water slides and a children's aqua splash fun area. There is a paddling pool, swimming pool, games area, bouncy castles, fishing lake, tennis court and bike rental.

Camping Sandaya La Côte de Nacre - France, Normandy, Calvados, Saint Aubin-sur-Mer

La Côte de Nacre is a large, popular site with many high-standard facilities; it’s an ideal holiday location for families. The state-of-the-art, heated pool complex includes open and covered (sliding roof) areas, slides, whirlpools and water jets, and on a hot day, becomes the focal point of the campsite. The small seaside town of Saint Aubin-sur-Mer, with its delightful old town buildings, is ten minutes away, and the lovely promenade, perfect for brisk walks and a stop for coffee or beer, is only a few minutes further. Along this coastline, there are D-Day Landing museums, memorials and numerous ceremonies taking place around the 6th of June. This town’s beach was the landing place for the Canadians in 1944, and there is a memorial on the seafront.

Camping de la Seine - France, Normandy, Seine-Maritime, Jumièges

Views of France's most famous river and the wooded hills opposite can be seen from Camping de la Seine, a small riverside campsite tucked away not far from Le Havre. The campsite offers spa services, bike hire and a large grassy expanse where youngsters can run around and let off steam. The staff here are keen to ensure a warm welcome and can arrange trips to local attractions and activities. Local farmers occasionally bring fresh local produce to the site. Camping de la Seine is a five-minute drive to the old town of Jumièges, with its beautiful 7th-century ruined abbey, shops, restaurants and amenities. Also close by is an outdoor activities park alongside a large swimming lake, making it a popular day out with options for all ages. Excellent and easy-going cycle routes and walking trails are all around, running through this largely flat landscape.

Camping de la Vée - France, Normandy, Orne, Bagnoles-de-l’Orne

Camping de la Vée is a lovely campsite in the town of Bagnoles de l’Orne and is open from March to November. On-site amenities include a snack bar with special meal offers in peak season, a play area and free WiFi. Several fully equipped mobile homes are available to rent. Bagnoles is an important thermal spa centre and can be reached by shuttle bus. The town’s Belle Epoque quarter is deservedly famous, lined with fine villas with extravagant polychrome façades influenced by the Art Deco style. Bagnoles is surrounded by the vast Andaines forest, which forms a part of the Parc Naturel Régional de Normandie Maine. This is great walking country, and the site managers will be pleased to recommend routes. A little further away, Alençon to the east is the region’s capital and has a great deal of interest, including the Château des Ducs.

Camping Sandaya l’Anse du Brick - France, Normandy, Manche, Maupertus-sur-Mer

A friendly, family site, l’Anse du Brick overlooks a picturesque bay on the northern tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, eight kilometres east of Cherbourg port. The campsite offers direct access to a small sandy beach and a woodland walk. This is a mature, terraced site with magnificent views and touring pitches. There are also mobile homes for rent. Beyond the site lie miles of walking tracks through the gorse-covered hills, which, together with a stark rock face, surround the site and make it a sheltered suntrap. A gourmet restaurant is conveniently located just outside the site gates.

Campsite pitch prices start from around £25 per night based on two people sharing, depending on the time of year.

The Swiss camping experience is a seamless blend of convenience, staggering views and a deep connection with nature. The Mediterranean atmosphere, untouched landscapes, Swiss mountains and the peak of the Alps are truly breathtaking and each region has its own special character.

Switzerland will also delight travellers' tastebuds with its rich and diverse culinary offerings influenced by each different region - and let’s not forget the incredible world-renowned chocolates and cheeses!

Rob Fearn, General Manager at Alan Rogers Travel Limited said, “The well-maintained network of campsites in Switzerland ensures that caravan and motorhome travellers can find a perfect spot to set up camp amidst the country's stunning scenery. From the shores of picturesque lakes to the foothills of the Alps, the options are as varied as the landscapes themselves. For more inspiration and suggested Swiss itineraries, visit ar.camp/swiss-sojourn.”

Suggested campsites and destinations:

Stay at Camping Erlach, situated on the shores of Lake Biel and enjoy your camping life to the fullest. Whether right on the beach, with a view of the lake or overlooking the Chasseral mountain range, the choice of pitches is extensive. Additionally, the brasserie by the lake invites you to indulge. Here, classic cuisine is reinterpreted, and dishes are prepared with local and seasonal ingredients. Camping Erlach is a great place to base yourself and visit the Three Lakes Region, Lake Neuchatel, Lake Murten, and Lake Biel which grace the countryside with their beauty. Lake Biel stands out among these jewels with its serene shores, including the charming town of Erlach. The medieval town has cobbled streets, historic buildings and a picturesque lakeside promenade.

Stay at Camping Jungfrau , this friendly and ever-popular site, is situated in a very imposing and dramatic steep valley with a fine view of the Jungfrau at the end. Mountain meltwater cascades hundreds of feet down the sheer rock walls of the valley. Many active pursuits are available in the area, as well as trips on the Jungfrau railway and mountain lifts. In winter, the site runs a shuttle bus to the local ski lifts, and large community lounges are available for après-ski enjoyment. Camping Jungfrau is a wonderful location to enjoy unparalleled views of Switzerland's iconic trio, Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau. Head to the car-free village of Mürren or take the cable car to the Schilthorn, which gained international fame as the setting for the 1969 James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". The rotating restaurant at the summit provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Or visit Staubbach Waterfall, situated in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, one of Switzerland's highest free-falling waterfalls. The sight of water cascading from a height of 297 metres against the backdrop of the alpine landscape is truly mesmerising. The Lauterbrunnen Valley itself is a stunning destination with numerous waterfalls - be that in summer or winter and Camping Jungfrau is the ideal base for trips to experience this.

The luxury spa resort of Bad Ragaz, situated in the Rhine Valley, and Camping Bad Ragaz form part of a lido and restaurant complex. Set in a small forest, the site offers simple, informal camping close to the river with an adjacent restaurant, pool and playground. The park and pool are free to camping guests, and a guest card provides discounts in local shops and attractions. Walking and cycling tracks abound, and it is just a short walk into the ancient spa town. Set between fruit-growing farms and the northern Alps, this is a very convenient base for exploring the local area and also provides a good overnight stop when travelling through this part of Switzerland.

Camping Bad Ragaz is the perfect place to stay to visit Santis, the highest mountain in the Alpstein massif, and provides spectacular views over six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy, particularly stunning during sunrise or sunset.

The campsite is also well located to visit Lake Walen (Walensee) in eastern Switzerland, which is surrounded by the majestic Churfirsten Mountains. The deep blue waters of Lake Walen are a popular destination for water sports, hiking, and relaxation. The sunny lakeside village of Quinten is only accessible via boat or foot. Include a trip to the principality of Liechtenstein to make this sojourn international. The iconic castle in the capital, Vaduz, is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. One particularly enchanting destination within this Alpine haven is Malbun, a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Liechtenstein's only ski resort is a hidden gem in winter and provides a picturesque setting for hiking during summer.

Camping Alpenblick is an all-year site in a stunning setting, located at the heart of the Bernese Oberland just 100 metres from the beautiful Lake Thun. A Swiss chalet-style building houses the reception, shop and bar/restaurant that is very popular with campers and locals alike (try the ‘schnitzelbrot’ and dine on the terrace in good weather). Campers can use a special tourist card with many benefits, including free local bus transport. This is a superb area for cycling and walking, with trails taking you through magnificent scenery all around the lake. The lake is popular for all manner of watersports, and cruisers depart from a point very close to Alpenblick. The views everywhere are majestic, and the site is well-positioned to visit the two lakes, Thun and Brienz, which are situated close to each other and offer a harmonious symphony of turquoise waters. Beyond their visual allure, these lakes provide a playground for water enthusiasts and a serene escape for those seeking tranquillity.

Campsite pitch prices start from around £50 per night, based on two people sharing, depending on the time of year.

Inspirational new cookbook from Caravan and Motorhome Club member Karen Wright - Meals on the Move: A Campsite Cooking Journey

Karen Wright, Caravan and Motorhome Club member and Great British Bake Off contestant, has written a cookbook travelogue that will be on sale from 12 September 2023.

Karen is a familiar face on campsites across the UK and Europe and at Club events. Her love of cooking and caravanning is legendary, and while she might predominantly be known for baking, Karen is a highly skilled and imaginative cook.

Earlier in the year, Karen and her husband John embarked on a month-long European trip with the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and Karen had the idea to write a cookbook as a journal, paying homage to each region she visited through cooking recipes typical to the locale.

Travelling through France into Italy and back via Switzerland and North Eastern France, their first stop was near the historic forest of Fontainebleau, where the humble French onion soup was born. Then moving onto Burgundy, the home of rich wine-based meals and onwards south, they stopped at the rugged Ardèche gorge and then into Provence, where they dined on simple locally bought vegetables that Karen cooked under the shade of ancient olive trees.

In Italy, Karen and John stayed in four different regions taking in the delights of places like Florence and Venice. Karen cooked all the Italian staples, pasta, pizza, risotto and more, dining al fresco under a setting sun. In Switzerland, they dined on grilled vegetables and meat, served with potatoes covered in melted cheese, all cooked raclette style whilst in view of snow-capped mountains. Back in France and pastures new, they stayed in four different campsites, and Karen was inspired to make the heartier and comforting foods of this fabulous area of France, like creamy pork and apples in cider.

Karen Wright said, “I was inspired to write the book when I was planning a motorhome trip in Europe. The trip was for a whole month and my budget would not stretch to dining out every day for that long. I wanted to eat well, like you would in a restaurant or hotel, and I also wanted to eat meals that were in keeping with the regions we were travelling in. The seeds of this book were sown then, easy meals with style that were suitable for both home and away.”

Karen will be on the Caravan and Motorhome Club stand (7.12) at the Motorhome & Caravan Show at the NEC between 17-22 October. Club Day is Tuesday, 17 October, and Karen will be unveiling a cake specially made for the Club and members on Club Day.

Meals on the Move: A Campsite Cooking Journal is available from 12 September 2023 at:

Karen’s Favourite Recipe

Karen said, “Mushroom bourguignon is so special to me as it was developed after spending a whole summer working on a campsite in Burgundy back in 2009. We revisited the campsite on this trip and found it to be just the same, perfect! The campsite restaurant serves classic beef bourguignon and I sampled it over and over whilst working on the site. I made the mushroom version as it is so much quicker and more suitable for cooking in a non-domestic setting, it is also vegan too. Every mouthful takes me back in time and brings forth all the special memories from a very wonderful place and time.”
