This is a satisfactory site for night halts or for visits to Basel. Although there are almost twice as many static caravan pitches as spaces for touring units, this site, on the edge of a residential district, is within easy reach of the city by tram. It is flat, with 75 level pitches for touring with access from the tarmac road. The grass pitches may become muddy in very wet weather but there are gravel hardstandings for motorhomes. All pitches have 10A electricity and young trees give some shade. Owned and run by the Camping and Caravanning Club of Basel, there is usually space available.
This continues to be one the most pleasant sites owned by the Swiss Touring Club that we have seen. It is well laid out and beautifully cared for and can be enjoyed as a base for local touring or as a restful stop en route. There are 150 level, grass pitches including 120 for touring units, all with electricity and 12 also have water and drainage. Eight pitches have hardstanding. A small marina adjoining the site is under the same ownership. The site is close to the large medieval town of Solothurn. Situated between the Aare river and farmland, the site enjoys pleasant views of the surrounding hills.
Camping Zürich is a smallish site only 4.5 km. from the centre of the city, in a pleasant situation, but with more demands on space than it can meet. With 150 touring pitches (all with 6/16A electricity), it may well pack units rather closely in season but there is much transit trade, so there are usually plenty of vacancies for early arrivals. Caravans go on flat hardstandings; tents, for which space may be easier to find, go on lawns. Trains pass by the site regularly through the day and up until midnight; there is also some road noise.
North
The landscape around Zurich consist of gentle hills, peaceful woods, clean lakes and rivers and picturesque villages. The town itself has over 50 museums and 100 galleries so there is plenty to see and do. Sitting on the Rhine, Basel is a major trade artery and its lively cosmopolitan air reflects this. Nearby the undulating green hills of the Jura, the broad plateaux with their magnificent views, and also the Laufental valley to the south of Basel, are delightful walking areas far away from any hustle and bustle. Here you can enjoy the rural idyll on well-signposted paths.
