The luxury spa resort of Bad Ragaz nestles in the Rhine valley and Camping Bad Ragaz forms part of the lido and restaurant complex. Set in a small forest, the site offers simple, informal camping close to the river. There are 86 flat, level gravel pitches of which 52 are for touring, all with access to 10A electricity. The Rhine and the extensive park and lake are within a minute’s walk and add to the peaceful nature of the site. If upon arrival reception is closed (hours are limited), visitors are invited to select an unreserved pitch and check in later.
Le Prese is on the Tirano to Saint Moritz road, south of the Bernina Pass. Camping Cavresc is set among grassy meadows in the Valposchiavo valley and is blessed with a southern climate, a peaceful ambience and beautiful views. It is a very informal and relaxed site with modern sanitary facilities. For touring units there are 30 flat, level pitches, all with 10A electricity and convenient water points, plus a group of eight fully serviced pitches. There is some shade. If the campsite reception is unmanned, walk back into town as the Sertori family, who own the site, also run the small well stocked supermarket. Le Prese is close to Italy and the Poschiavo Lake.
In the heart of the village of Churwalden on the Chur - Saint Moritz road, Pradafenz makes a convenient night stop and being amidst the mountains, is also an excellent base for walking and exploring this scenic area. The site is mainly occupied by year-round seasonal units, but at the front there are four large, flat terraces for 40 touring units, most of which are on hardstanding. All have 10A electricity, gas, drainage and TV. The top terrace is available for tents or as an overflow for caravans. The gravel road to the touring terraces is a little steep, but the friendly owner will assist with his tractor if required.
This small site is directly beside Lake Bodensee in the town’s parkland. The site has some shade and a few of the touring pitches are by the water’s edge. A large, adjoining lawned field is used for tents and sports and also leads to the playground and paddling pool. There are many static caravans with room for 120 touring units. Pitches are on a mixture of gravel and grass, on flat areas on either side of access roads, most with 6/10A electricity. Cars may have to be parked elsewhere. A railway runs directly along one side. A single set of buildings provide all the site’s amenities. There is access for boats from the campsite, but powered craft must be under a certain h.p. There are splendid views across this large, inland sea and interesting boats ply up and down between Constance and Lindau and Bregenz. The town’s swimming lido adjoins the tent field and is free to campers. This is a beautiful area and the site is well placed for touring around Lake Bodensee. The weather can be unsettled in this region.
Camping Morteratsch is a well-equipped mountain site in stunning scenery near St. Moritz. Close to Pontresina, it lies next to the road leading to the Bernina Pass and Tirano in Italy and nestles in the valley floor between fir-clad mountains. There are about 250 pitches for touring units and tents in summer, about half with electricity. Some are in small clearings amongst tall trees and some in a larger open space. They are neither numbered nor marked, and their size is dictated by the natural space between the trees.
Camping Hüttenberg is located in eastern Switzerland, in the middle of the beautiful Lake Constance and Rhine landscape. Family-owned and run, this peaceful site is situated on the edge of the forest with wonderful views of Lake Constance and the Rhine. 270 permanent pitches. 60 touring pitches, with views of the Lake and Rhine or near the swimming pool. 10amp electric. If you’re looking for a simple campsite set amidst glorious scenery and well-placed for exploring the area's possibilities for outdoor activities, then here it is. Camping Chapella doesn’t even boast a reception, but it has glorious views of the valley with its pine-covered slopes and snow-capped mountains. There's canoeing on the cascading river, mountain meadows, and densely forested slopes to hike and cycle through. There's a family-friendly feel, and everyone can enjoy the serenity of the natural surroundings.
Situated close to the Klosters-Davos road and the nearby town of Landquart, this deep valley campsite provides a comfortable night stop near the A13 motorway, as well as a quiet spot for a few days rest. The 40 touring pitches are not marked or separated but are all on level grass off a central gravel road through the long, narrow, wooded site. All pitches have 6/10A electricity. The static caravans (about 100) are mostly hidden from view in small alcoves. A modern, timber-clad building at the entrance houses all the necessary facilities – reception, community room and sanitary facilities. If on arrival reception is closed (11.00-16.00), select a pitch and check-in later.
Sur En is at the eastern end of the Engadine valley, about 10 km. from the Italian and Austrian borders. The area is perhaps better known as a skiing region, but has summer attractions as well. This fairly level site is in an open valley with little shade. There is probably room for 120 touring units, all with electricity (6A), on the meadows where pitches are neither marked nor numbered. As you approach on road 27 and spot the site way below by the river, the drop may appear daunting, but becomes less so as you proceed. The exit is steep and caravanners will require plenty of pulling power, although assistance will be provided if it proves too difficult.
Camping Cul is a friendly and relaxed site in a good location on the banks of the River Inn, east of Davos. The site was established in 1952 and has remained in the same family ever since. Pitches are grassy and lightly shaded. Many have electrical connections and virtually all have fine views of the magnificent mountain scenery all around. On-site amenities include a bar, small shop and snack bar. There is a fully equipped communal kitchen. This is excellent walking and cycling country, with a number of routes possible direct from the site. The Rhätische Bahn is a superb mountain railway passing close to the site and discounted tickets are available for purchase at reception. A number of world class resorts are within easy reach, notably Davos, Klosters and Saint Moritz. The latter is one of the Alpine region’s glitziest resorts, maybe best known for its designer shops, grand hotels and, of course, for the terrifying Cresta Run, the original adrenaline ride!
Greatly improved over recent years, Camping Fischerhaus is just meters from the shore of Lake Constance. With a waterside restaurant and café/bar with a terrace, guests can relax whilst watching the yachts on the lake. Adjacent, and free to campers, is a superb swimming pool and sports complex. The site has 150 touring pitches, all with 10A electricity and 24 also with water and drainage. These are mainly on grass, with some long hardstandings for larger outfits, and are separate from the seasonal units. A new toilet block serves the touring area, with full sanitary facilities near reception.
This attractive site, with its own lake, nestles in the Surselva Valley among mountains snowcapped for most of the year. Surrounded by tall pine trees, the site is owned by the Touring Club of Switzerland (the Swiss version of the Caravan Club) and provides 150 fairly level pitches, 81 with 13A electricity. There are plenty of opportunities for walks, nature trails and cycle rides, whilst the more adventurous can enjoy themselves canyoning, rafting, hang-gliding or mountain biking. For children, the adventure playground is a challenging combination of water, rocks and bridges. Hardy souls can brave the fresh mountain waters of the lake.
Schaffhausen is a family-friendly site in a very pleasant setting on the banks of the Rhine, with plenty of shade from a variety of tall trees. It is level and grassy, the first half being open lawns and the rest of the touring area wooded, with numbered pitches (mostly small – up to 70 sq.m) and 3-4A electricity. There are many day visitors in summer as the site, which incorporates a public park, is ideally placed for swimming, canoeing and diving in the Rhine. Whilst here, you would not want to miss the impressive waterfalls at Schaffhausen, 150 m. wide and 25 m. high.
Saint Cassian, owned and managed by three generations of the Nadig family, caters mainly for static holiday caravans, but has some room for touring units and is suitable for a night stop when travelling to or from Saint Moritz. The site is on a fairly steep slope but the 60 touring pitches (out of 190) are terraced between the statics under a cover of tall pines. Forty have 10A electricity. Being 1,415 m. above sea level in a north-south valley, this is a peaceful location surrounded by scenic views and abundant sunshine; 140 signed walking paths of various degrees of difficulty start from the site.
Camping RinerLodge forms part of a holiday complex that has been developed at Glaris, 5 km. south of the important resort of Davos. The complex consists of a small campsite and an adjacent hotel and restaurant. The campsite offers 84 pitches, all equipped with 16A electricity. They are grassy and many have fine mountain views. A number of footpaths and cycle trails pass close to the site. The hotel restaurant is very good, and specialises in regional cuisine. There is no toilet block on site but there are ample facilities within the hotel for use by all campers.
Silvaplana is situated at the junction of the road from Italy over the Malojapass, the road from northern Switzerland via the Julierpass, and the road that continues through Saint Moritz to Austria. Camping Silvaplana, therefore, might be useful for a night stop if travelling this way. The site is mainly level and the 180 pitches for touring units are numbered and marked by posts or tapes, with 120 electrical connections (16A).
Leebrücke is a long, narrow park in a small wooded valley beside the River Sitter. Permanent units are alongside most of the river, with touring units behind and tents in their own area at the far end. The 70 unmarked touring pitches are fairly flat, grassy or grass and gravel. In a country situation, but only a few kilometres from Lake Constance, this could be considered as a quiet alternative to the very busy lakeside sites.
