In a quiet situation in the Tuscan hills, six kilometres from the sea at Donoratico, this high quality site has a busy and attractive medium sized pool, overlooked by a pleasant restaurant/bar. The terrace has commanding views over the area and the sea and sunsets are spectacular. The site is set on steeply rising ground and has 213 pitches, of which 101 shaded pitches are for touring units, all with 3/10A electricity. They are in tiered rows on fairly narrow terraces. Although busy in high season, it remains peaceful at night. There is a large nature reserve adjacent and a free bus to the 20 km. long sandy beach.
Just forty minutes from Florence and an hour from Pisa, this site is beautifully situated high in the Tuscan hills, close to the fascinating town of Pistoia. Part of an old walled estate, there are impressive views of the surrounding countryside.
This large, beautifully maintained seaside site is about 70 kilometres northwest of Naples within a pine forest, cleverly left in its natural state. Although it does not feel like it, there are 900 touring pitches in clearings, either of grass and sand or on hardstanding, all with electricity, 80 now also with water and waste water. Finding a pitch may take time as there are so many good ones to choose from, but staff will help in season. Most pitches are well shaded, however there are some in the sun for cooler periods. The central complex is superb with well designed buildings providing for all needs (the site is some distance from the town).
In the heart of the Maremma, on the Etruscan Coast south of Livorno, Etruria Village Camping is an ideal place for a peaceful, healthy and enjoyable holiday with family and friends. It is a large, well equipped site with 200 impressive pitches, all with 6A electricity connections and with direct access to a fine sandy beach where there is a popular brasserie, open in the evenings and serving good food. Unlike many pine-dominated sites, there is an attractive open canopy with clever landscaping. The main services are centrally located and are all of a high standard.
Camping Taimì is located in Marina di Massa, Italy, offering a comfortable and eco-conscious holiday experience just 500 meters from the beach. On site you will find 83 large and shaded touring pitches (around 90m2) with 6Amp electric hook up points available. The site is well-equipped with a range of facilities designed for comfort and enjoyment. A highlight is the outdoor swimming pool featuring a wooden deck surround instead of tiles, blending harmoniously with the environment. The pool is accessible with a hoist and wheelchair access. A modern restaurant can also be found on site and provides various snacks and drinks throughout the day including breakfast with fresh croissants and cakes, and evening aperitifs. Takeaway options are also available via a dedicated app.
Lake Idro, one of the smaller northern Italian lakes, is tucked away in the mountains west of Lake Garda. Rio Vantone is on the lake's southeast shore with marvellous views across the water to the villages on the opposite bank and surrounding mountains.
Camping Smeraldo is a unique and simple site near the seaside town of Moneglia. It has been formed out of a cliff face and was once the site for railway workers. Touring pitches (25) and tent pitches (35) are provided on hard terraces overlooking the sea. Electricity (3A) and artificial shade are available. A number of two- and three-bedroom chalets are also available to rent. On-site amenities are limited; a basic shop and a café/restaurant. The restaurant and its terrace provide fine sea views which are extra special on moonlit evenings. The owners are very friendly and helpful and English is spoken.
Mons Gibel Camping Park Belpasso offers a perfect escape by the picturesque slopes of Mount Etna. This small campsite provides stunning panoramic views of the volcano, a refreshing swimming pool, and well-maintained facilities. On-site, there are 30 touring pitches, of which 6Amp electric hook-up points are available. Pitches are separated by small hedging, but it does provide excellent views of the surrounding area and the volcano.
What an amazing experience awaits you at Seiser Alm! Elisabeth and Erhard Mahlknecht have created a superb site in the magnificent Südtirol region of the Dolomite mountains. Towering peaks provide a wonderful backdrop when you dine in the charming, traditionally styled restaurant on the upper terrace. Here you will also find the bar, shop and reception. The 150 touring pitches have 16A electricity, gas, water, drainage, satellite connection and WiFi. Guests were delighted with the site when we visited, many coming to walk or cycle, some just to enjoy the surroundings. There are countless things to see and do here, including a full entertainment programme and a brilliant new pool.
This family site situated at Capo Ferrato has been owned by the same family for a quarter of a century and improvements are made every year, all of them in sympathy with the environment. The 186 reasonably sized pitches are on sand and have 3A electricity. Some have shade and views of the superb, sandy beach and the sea beyond.
Camping Delle Rose is close to the French border, and a few miles inland from the Italian Riviera. This is a peaceful spot, set deep in the Maritime Alps, with many unspoilt medieval towns, picturesque churches and bustling markets. This is a friendly, family site where Lorena, Mauro and Lorenzo will guarantee a warm welcome. The site is located on a steeply terraced hillside, surrounded by eucalyptus and mimosa. The 80 touring pitches are 40-80 sq.m, and most have 3A electricity connections. A number of mobile homes and apartments are available for rent. Many improvements are being made to the site and those already completed are of a high standard.
Situated at the southern end of the magnificent Costa Rei, this small, very friendly and well managed site has 83 touring pitches, many in great positions on the superb white sand beachfront. All pitches have 3/6A electricity, are of generous proportions and the whole site enjoys absolute tranquillity. The charming restaurant holds it own against the village competition and special evenings are often held when the local wines are matched to the food served. This site is brilliant for beach lovers and there are many watersports on offer. It is reasonably priced and we thoroughly enjoyed the extremely happy, small site atmosphere.
You will receive a warm welcome from Hans & Francesca and English is spoken by all in reception. This site is in an ideal location for touring Tuscany and visiting Sienna and Florence. Getting into Florence is just a ten minute drive to Bucine and a one-hour train journey takes you right into the centre of this beautiful city. Sienna is about a 45 minute drive away. The setting of this site is perfect in the centre of Chianti country, with beautiful views across the Tuscany countryside and some amazing sunsets.The site consists of 111 individual touring pitches with shade and separated by low hedging, all have hook-up and a small sink unit. There are also 76 mobile homes and four Safari Tents for hire. There are three pools for campsite guests, surrounded by a sun terrace with many sun loungers. For the active, there are tennis courts, a volleyball court, a football field, ping pong tables, bike hire and a scenic network of paths that runs around the campsite.
Camping del Garda is directly on the lake with access through gates that provide security at night. This is one of the largest campsites around Lake Garda and is more of a self-contained holiday village with many pitches used by tour operators and permanent units. However, they are generally separate from the touring pitches. The mature trees provide shade for the 659 grass pitches, of which 337 are for touring units. Arranged in numbered rows, all have 4A electrical connections, and hedges have been cleverly trimmed for maximum attractiveness. Hard roads give access. This is a well-kept site with colour added by attractive flower beds.
Nestled amidst the mountains in Tuscany, Italy, Camping Falterona is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is located in Pratovecchio Stia, Arezzo, Tuscany, and is 840 meters high and offers stunning mountain views and crisp, fresh air. The campsite is situated strategically, approximately 5 km from the town of Stia and within an hour's drive from Florence, Arezzo, Forlì, and Cesena. It borders the National Park of the Casentino Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Camping Falterona provides direct access to hiking trails, cycle paths, and opportunities to explore the rich flora and fauna of the region. The Arno River is just 5 km away, where you can swim or take a refreshing dip during the summer.
Camping Village Panoramico Fiesole is a mature but pleasant site in a superb hilltop situation offering wonderful views over Florence. The 120 pitches, all with 5A electricity, are on terraces and steep walks to and from the various facilities could cause problems for guests with mobility problems. There is shade in many parts of the site.
It would be difficult to find a more beautiful lake than Orta, surrounded by wooded hills and mountains and fringed with ancient towns and villages. Camping Royal, family owned and run, sits on a hillside overlooking the lake. There are 60 pitches, 20 for touring, set on level terraces, each with 5A Europlug and a water point nearby. Although professionally managed, this site has maintained the typical relaxed informality for which Italy is famous. Popular with campers from all over Europe, many return year after year. Nothing seems to be too much trouble to ensure a memorable stay.
A set of mountains rise from Camping Faè in the Italian province of Trentino: these peaks are the Brenta Dolomites, making up a landscape that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.Camping Faè is a family-run site with 86 touring pitches shaded by trees, mountain views, and modern facilities. It has a bar and a lounge to collapse into after a long day hiking the mountains; two barbecue areas, a playground, a ping pong table and a football table are also on hand, along with a small supermarket stocked with leading groceries, freshly baked bread and some local products. The team is multilingual.
This large, traditional, lakeside site is a merger of two different sites with the result that the 354 pitches (about 175 for touring units) appear randomly dispersed around the site. However, those alongside the lake are in small groups and close together; the main bar, restaurant and shop are also located at the lower level. The main area is at the top of a fairly steep hill on slightly sloping or terraced grass and has slightly larger pitches.
Centro Vacanze San Marino, at 400 m. above sea level and positioned on an attractive hillside, has lovely views of the Adriatic. You'll arrive via twisting mountainous roads winding through dramatic scenery and will discover an excellent, modern site with a variety of well-tended trees offering welcome shade. Make sure you visit the ancient city of San Marino at the top of the mountain (4 km).

Basilicata
Southern Italy forms the lower boot of the Italian peninsula, containing the ankle (Abruzzo and Molise and southern Lazio), the toe (Calabria), and the heel (Apulia). On the eastern coast is the Adriatic Sea, leading into the rest of the Mediterranean through the Strait of Otranto. On the Adriatic, south of the spur of the boot, the peninsula of Monte Gargano, the Gulf of Salerno, the Gulf of Naples, and the Gulf of Gaeta are each named after a large coastal city. Basilicata is a remote and wild region that has remained largely unspoilt.
Basilicata is mostly an upland country, scattered with ruins. The brooding town of Melfi has a formidable Norman castle, while nearby Venosa was once the largest Roman colony. The town has an archaeology park with remains of Roman baths and an amphitheatre.
Basilicata has two provinces: Matera and Potenza.

Cuisine of the region
Cuisine of Basilicata is mainly based on the use of pork and sheep, beans, cereals and vegetables, with the addition of aromas such as hot peppers, powdered raw peppers and horseradish. The local gastronomy is for historical-cultural reasons, typically based on simple recipes and on the culture of reuse, in particular of meat and bread.
