Just forty minutes from Florence and an hour from Pisa, this site is beautifully situated high in the Tuscan hills, close to the fascinating town of Pistoia. Part of an old walled estate, there are impressive views of the surrounding countryside.
La Sfinge is peacefully located in the famous area of Cinque Terre and stylish Portofino, in a landscape of pine and acacia trees, with some panoramic views. Most of the 65 touring pitches are located at the lower level with tent pitches on pleasant terraces, some with views. There are permanent residents on the site but they are separated from the touring pitches. A set evening meal is prepared at a good price with barbecues in high season. There is a free private shuttle service to the beach and to the railway station to explore the region. The owners are diligent, keen to please and speak good English. There is a pleasant atmosphere at this small, uncomplicated site just 3 km. from the sea. It would particularly suit those who like different types of watersports.
Marina di Bibbona is a relatively little known resort situated a little to the south of Livorno and close to the better-known resort of Cecina. There are 324 good sized pitches, 173 for touring units, all with electricity and 40 with water and drainage. Most are well shaded by pine, olive and eucalyptus trees. The remainder of the site has a sunnier, more open setting with mobile homes or chalets belonging to the site or to tour operators. There is something for everyone here and the site has been thoughtfully designed and is well maintained.
This large, traditional, lakeside site is a merger of two different sites with the result that the 354 pitches (about 175 for touring units) appear randomly dispersed around the site. However, those alongside the lake are in small groups and close together; the main bar, restaurant and shop are also located at the lower level. The main area is at the top of a fairly steep hill on slightly sloping or terraced grass and has slightly larger pitches.
A spacious site on the Apulia seafront. Villaggio Camping Capo Vieste is spread over six hectares of land a 15-minute drive from the seaside town of Vieste, in Apulia's Foggia province. The campsite offers 350 spacious and well-shaded pitches for campers, caravans, and tents right in front of the beach.
Camping Village Laguna Blu is a large site, pleasantly placed between the sea and a huge lagoon, the beach being directly across the road from the site. Most of the 600 pitches (450 for touring units) have 6A electricity and are shaded with pine and eucalyptus trees. Some pitches are in the trees; others are on level ground in long rows, the end ones enjoying lagoon-side positions. A considerable number are fully serviced. On-site amenities are close to the entrance and include a novel white, canvas-roofed restaurant/pizzeria plus a self-service restaurant. The site offers an ambitious entertainment programme and many watersports, notably windsurfing and sailing. It is also a good base for exploring northern Sardinia. One of the most popular excursions is to the beautiful Grotte di Nettuno (Neptune’s Grotto). The site is a member of the Baia Group and reflects its high standards.
Camping Village Mare is 18 km. Northwest of Trieste, at the top of an 80-metre cliff, has superb views over the Sistiana Bay. The campsite is situated in a peaceful spot amongst trees that line the coastline and offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. Of the 500 pitches, 340 are reserved for touring units, all with 4/6A electricity and water nearby. Some are in light woodland. Everyone is friendly, and English is spoken.
Set high on a peninsula, on the quieter western shore of Lake Garda, La Rocca is an amiable, family orientated campsite. The 180 attractive touring pitches enjoy shade from the tree canopy, and 20 are on open terraces with lake views. Also, there are 25 mobile homes to rent. Visitors have the choice of two pebble lakeside beaches with a jetty. The beaches can be accessed from the site, and there is a pleasant pool complex. The site has all modern amenities without losing its distinctive Italian ambience with an open feel. Nothing is too much trouble for the management. The owner, Livio, is charming and very engaging with his pleasant, halting English. The restaurant offers a selection of dishes and pizzas, and there is a selection of sports activities. It is close to traditional Italian villages, modern theme parks and all manner of watersports. The beach is accessed via a tunnel beneath the road.
Camping Toscolano is located in Toscolano Maderno, on the western shore of Lake Garda, in the province of Brescia, Italy. It offers a unique setting, being situated within the historical walls of a former 14th-century monastery, providing a charming and tranquil atmosphere among cypress trees. The campsite boasts direct access to Lake Garda, with its own private beach (both sandy and pebbly sections). This offers opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and various water sports. It's conveniently located with a w walkway leading to the port of Toscolano and within walking distance of the town centres of both Toscolano and Maderno. Guests can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Garda on one side and the Dolomites mountains on the other.
Set alongside the beautiful Adriatic coast with its long, soft sand beaches, this site has 270 pitches, all with 6A electricity, 200 with water and waste water. The site is aimed at families, and the swimming pools, play areas and entertainment programme will keep everyone busy. The atmosphere is lively and the management do their utmost to keep everyone happy. There is a self-service restaurant and a lovely bar/café on the beach, with a gelateria and superb miniclub. A novel feature is the American-style grill bar serving mouth watering food.
Tucked away in the Apennines in a small village, this interesting little campsite has many surprises. Eco-chiocciola (named after the snail wearing his house on his back) is being developed by the owner Ottavio Mazzanti as a place to enjoy the natural geographic, geological, botanical and zoological features of the area. Comforts such as the swimming pool are designed to offer relaxation when not exploring. The 40 small touring pitches, all with 6A electrical connections, are on level or gently sloping ground with some terraces, many enjoying superb views. This is a peaceful site with a distinctly rustic feel for people who enjoy natural settings. It is best suited to tent campers and small motorhomes.
This superb site has a lot to offer. It benefits from a wonderful panorama of the Colli Fiorentini hills with acres of the Zecchi family vineyards to the east adding to its appeal and is just 15 km. from Florence. The charming and hard working owners, Marcello and Daniella, have a wine producing background and you can purchase their fine wines at the site’s shop. Their aim is to provide an enjoyable and peaceful atmosphere for families. All 106 touring pitches are of a good size, kept neat and tidy and have 6A electricity. On arrival you are given a joining pack and escorted to view available pitches then assisted in taking up your chosen pitch.
Framura is an unusual, small, cliff-side site of 170 pitches including just 15 pitches for touring units and ten for tents. Positioned on the site of the old railway, the pitches themselves are fabulous as they are directly above the crystal clear waters here, but there is no shade. Access to the site is through the old railway tunnel. The supporting amenities are basic but have a certain charm, some being cut into the rock face. Direct access to a narrow but pleasant beach is via a steep stairway. The site is considered unsuitable for children and the infirm and has no accessible facilities.
Campsite La Liccia is a campsite in Santa Teresa Gallura, Olbia-Tempio; situated on a hill overlooking a very long white sandy beach ( a 10 min walk away), this beautiful natural setting makes it the perfect choice for all those who enjoy a mix of sporty adventures and relaxing in the sun on their holiday.This terraced campsite and campsite with sloping grounds has 145 touring pitches, which are marked out with shade.
On the southern shore of Lake Garda, Le Palme is a quiet site on the attractive Riviera degli Olivi, yet within easy reach of numerous attractions including several theme parks. There are 133 touring pitches, all with electricity (6-10A), water and waste water connections. Trees provide some shade throughout and a few pitches have spectacular views across the lake, for which a supplement is payable. Some mobile homes and chalets are available for hire. Nearby Lazise and Peschiera del Garda are both attractive towns with plenty of history, as well as shops, bars and restaurants. The ancient city of Verona is an easy drive away.
On the Cesanatico coastline of Emilia-Romagna, this site is unusually located in a shaded park area just 450 m. from the beautiful sandy beach. It is a site with a very Italian flavour and when we visited we were made very welcome. The 200 touring pitches, with 3/10A electricity, are cosily positioned and most have shade. There is a large swimming pool and paddling pool and an ambitious programme of activities and entertainment takes place throughout the day and during the evening. The bar and restaurant facilities on site are very good, as is the pool bar.
Camping Mare e Pineta is a vast site located within a pinewood at the heart of the Adriatic Riviera. The site enjoys direct access to a gently shelving sandy beach. There are 1,300 shady pitches (110 for touring), all with 6A electricity. A large number of permanent pitches are distributed throughout the site. This is a lively site in high season with a large and varied entertainment programme, including yoga, fitness classes, dance courses and live shows. There are also activities on the beach, such as volleyball, beach tennis, beach soccer, basketball and bowls.
Camping del Garda is directly on the lake with access through gates that provide security at night. This is one of the largest campsites around Lake Garda and is more of a self-contained holiday village with many pitches used by tour operators and permanent units. However, they are generally separate from the touring pitches. The mature trees provide shade for the 659 grass pitches, of which 337 are for touring units. Arranged in numbered rows, all have 4A electrical connections, and hedges have been cleverly trimmed for maximum attractiveness. Hard roads give access. This is a well-kept site with colour added by attractive flower beds.
Nestled under a castle and close to a tiny village, Camping Cevedale has a European atmosphere with very little English spoken, however, you will be made very welcome by the owner. The 233 pitches are grouped in two areas on either side of a fast flowing river (fenced) which generates a pleasant, natural sound. The 100 touring pitches, all with electricity (only 2A), are shaded, on grass and slope somewhat; they are in various areas among the well kept seasonal caravans. Some seasonal campers come here every holiday and most have built complex wooden chalets next to their caravans. We loved it here. This area is known for skiing in winter, rafting, adventure sports, mountain bike riding and trekking. Adventure sport courses are arranged by the management, and access to this kind of activity is one of the site’s strengths.

Basilicata
Southern Italy forms the lower boot of the Italian peninsula, containing the ankle (Abruzzo and Molise and southern Lazio), the toe (Calabria), and the heel (Apulia). On the eastern coast is the Adriatic Sea, leading into the rest of the Mediterranean through the Strait of Otranto. On the Adriatic, south of the spur of the boot, the peninsula of Monte Gargano, the Gulf of Salerno, the Gulf of Naples, and the Gulf of Gaeta are each named after a large coastal city. Basilicata is a remote and wild region that has remained largely unspoilt.
Basilicata is mostly an upland country, scattered with ruins. The brooding town of Melfi has a formidable Norman castle, while nearby Venosa was once the largest Roman colony. The town has an archaeology park with remains of Roman baths and an amphitheatre.
Basilicata has two provinces: Matera and Potenza.

Cuisine of the region
Cuisine of Basilicata is mainly based on the use of pork and sheep, beans, cereals and vegetables, with the addition of aromas such as hot peppers, powdered raw peppers and horseradish. The local gastronomy is for historical-cultural reasons, typically based on simple recipes and on the culture of reuse, in particular of meat and bread.
Cavatelli e fagioli: A hearty pasta dish made with cavatelli pasta, beans, tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil.
Pasta mollicata: A simple but delicious pasta dish made with stale bread, onions, tomatoes, and red wine.
