Combourg
Dominated by an imposing feudal castle, this is a small old town that is arguably better known than its features merit. Châteaubriand, the great Romantic writer, lived here for a while.
Dinard
Across the estuary of the River Rance from St Malo and in direct contrast. In the 19th century, Dinard became a fashionable resort, and its reputation rivalled that of Brighton. Many of its splendid hotels no longer exist though elegant villas remain, which give a clue as to its former glory years. Modern-day Dinard is a small resort with an excellent beach, fine views and pleasant parks.

Dinard's reputation as the "Cannes of the North" has attracted a wide variety of stars over the years. Winston Churchill enjoyed holidaying on the River Rance.
It is rumoured locally that Alfred Hitchcock visited Dinard and that a house standing over the Plage de l’Ecluse was his inspiration for his most famous film, Psycho. A gigantic statue of Hitchcock with 2 menacing birds on each shoulder stands to commemorate the annual English-language film festival.
Lawrence of Arabia lived in Dinard as a small child, long before his Arabian exploits, and Picasso often painted here in the 1920s.
Debussy is also supposed to have had the idea for "La Mer" during a visit in the 1900s. So it would seem that the Emerald Coast was a magnet for celebrities long before the Cote d’Azur!
Rennes
This is the administrative and cultural capital of Brittany. Its main sights include the Palais de Justice, the former Breton parliament building and the 27-acre Thabor gardens. Take to time to wander the pleasant streets, lined with boutiques, and admire the centre's mediaeval gabled houses.
