Camping Las Hortensias
Open for just four months, from June to September, Las Hortensias is a friendly site on the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain. The site enjoys a fine setting on a sheltered sandy beach adjacent to the Mirador Hotel. Well-lit tarmac roads connect 156 pitches. Each pitch has 6-10A electricity, and there are water points throughout. Many pitches are well-shaded by pine trees in pleasant, peaceful locations.
Camping Lagos de Somiedo
This is a most unusual site in the Parque Natural de Somiedo. Winding narrow roads with challenging rock overhangs, hairpin bends and breathtaking views (for 8 km) finally bring you to the campsite at an elevation of 1,200 m. This is a site for 4x4s, powerful small campervans and cars – not for medium or large motorhomes, and caravans are not accepted. It is not an approach for the faint-hearted!
Camping la Paz
This unusual site occupies a spectacular mountain location. The small reception building is opposite a solid rock face and many hundreds of feet below the site. The ascent to the upper part of the site is quite daunting, but staff will place your caravan for you if required, although motorhome drivers will have an exciting drive to the top, especially to the loftier pitches. Once there, the views are absolutely outstanding, both along the coast and inland to the Picos de Europa mountains. There are 434 pitches, all with 10/15A electricity. There is also a lower section in a shaded valley to which access is easier, if rather tight in places.
Camping la Cascada
Located in a clearing of the attractive Arbon Valley, this friendly, family-run site offers the chance to experience the delights of rural Spain. There are 74 very small pitches (60 for touring units), all sited on gently sloping grass with electricity (4A), long leads are required. The beaches and small villages of Costa Verde are only 12 km. away and the site has information about this spectacular region. Access to the site is not difficult but a 3,500 kg. weight restriction on the small bridge at the site entrance makes it unsuitable for larger units.
Camping Cudillero
If you need a stop en route convenient to Gijon, or are planning to explore this part of the Costa Verde, then this attractive and well cared for site should be considered. Only 2 km. from the bustling fishing village of Cudillero, it offers 141 easily accessed touring pitches, all on level grass and with 6A electricity. Pitches are numbered and separated by mature hedges and trees that provide a degree of shade if required. This is a family-owned and managed site with good, clean facilities, including a shop, a very pleasant and welcoming bar with adjoining restaurant area and a small swimming pool. Close by is an excellent beach, with fine sand and rock pools and picturesque Cudillero with its choice of fish restaurants should not be missed.
Camping Taurán
Tucked away at the end of a single track road, this small and attractive site is ideally situated for visiting the old fishing port of Luarca. Set on a level plateau above the town, the site has views over the sea and the hills beyond. The 100 level grass pitches, all with 10A electricity, are numbered and separated by mature hedges and trees giving a good amount of shade. The modern sanitary facilities are housed in a single rustic building near the site entrance. The site owner, Rosa, and her family live in a building which also houses reception, a small shop, a restaurant and bar and she is always available to ensure visitors have an enjoyable stay at this tranquil site.
Camping Picos de Europa
This delightful site is, as its name suggests, an ideal spot from which to explore these dramatic limestone mountains on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The site itself is continuously developing and the dynamic owner, Ramon, and his nephew who helps out when he is away, are both very pleasant and nothing is too much trouble. The site is in a valley beside a pleasant, fast flowing river. The 160 marked pitches are of varying sizes and have been developed in three avenues, on level grass mostly backing on to hedging, with 6A electricity. An area for tents and apartments is over a bridge past the fairly small, but pleasant, round swimming pool.
Camping Costa Verde
This uncomplicated coastal site has a marked Spanish flavour and is just 1.5 km. from the pleasant town of Colunga. Although little English is spoken, the cheerful owner and his helpful staff will make sure you get a warm welcome. The great advantage for many is that 200 m. from the gate, is a spacious beach by a low tide lagoon with a recently constructed marine parade, ideal for younger children. Some of the 210 pitches are occupied on a seasonal basis, but there are 140 for touring units. These are flat but with little shade; electricity (5/10A) is available (long leads needed in places). The site gets very busy in high season.
Camping l’Amuravela
This well-maintained, family-run site, west of Santander, is walking distance from the quaint little fishing port of Cudillero with wonderful fish restaurants and jauntily painted houses. This is a great base for exploring the verdant ‘green Spain’. Nearby is some of the most attractive mountain scenery in the region, with plenty of gorgeous cycling and walking routes that lead you through stunning, lush countryside.
Camping Caravaning Arenal de Moris
This smart, well-run site is close to three fine sandy beaches so gets very busy at peak times. It has a backdrop of the mountains in the nature reserve known as the Sueve which is important for a breed of short Asturian horse, the Asturcone. The site has 330 grass pitches (260 for touring units) of 40-70 sq.m. and with 180 electricity connections available (10A). There are some shady, terraced pitches while others are on an open, slightly sloping field with limited views of the sea. The restaurant with a terrace serves local dishes and overlooks the pool with hills and woods beyond.
Camping Playa de la Franca
Camping Playa de la Franca is a modest site at the eastern end of the Asturias region, around 70 km. from Santander and would be useful for a stopover. The coastline is rugged and offers some superb walking opportunities along towering cliffs and across clean, sandy beaches. The vast Picos de Europa mountain range rises to the south. The site has 138 with 105 available for touring units pitches (45-90 sq.m). Pitches are grassy and offer abundant shade. They also have electrical connections (6/16A) and water taps close at hand. There is a bar and restaurant at the entrance to the site serving typically Asturian cuisine. Mobile homes and chalets are available to rent.

Asturias

Like its neighbouring province, Cantabria, Asturias also has a beautiful coastline, albeit more rugged and wild, with the Picos range separating them. In the south the Cantabrian mountains form a natural border between Asturias and Castilla-León.

Luarca

Situated between the foothills of the Picos mountains and the coast is the seaside town of Llanes, in the east. It has several good beaches, beautiful coves and, given its location, is a good base for exploring the Picos del Europa. Along the coast towards Gijón are more seaside resorts including Ribadesella, with its fishing harbour and fine beach. The cities of Gijón and, in particular, Avilés are renowned for their carnival festivities, a national event which takes place in late February. This week-long party involves dancing, live music, fireworks and locals who dress up in elaborate costumes. South of here, towards the centre of the province, is the capital, Oviedo. The city boasts a pedestrian old quarter with numerous squares and narrow streets, a cathedral, palaces, a fine arts museum, an archaeological museum plus various churches that date from the ninth century. There are also plenty of sidrerías (cider houses). The west coast of Asturias is more rugged. One of the most attractive towns along here is Luarca, built around a cove surrounded by sheer cliffs. With a fishing harbour and an array of good restaurants and bars, the town’s traditional character is reflected in its chigres – old Asturian taverns– where visitors learn the art of drinking cider.
