Alan Rogers Review of Camping Las Hortensias
Open for just four months, from June to September, Las Hortensias is a friendly site on the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain. The site enjoys a fine setting on a sheltered sandy beach adjacent to the Mirador Hotel. Well-lit tarmac roads connect 156 pitches. Each pitch has 6-10A electricity, and there are water points throughout. Many pitches are well-shaded by pine trees in pleasant, peaceful locations.
After a day on the beach or exploring the nearby rock pools, the campsites bar with terrace is a great spot to enjoy a bite to eat whilst watching the sunset overlooking the sea. In addition to the water-based activities, various leisure options are available, such as a football pitch, tennis court and Children's playground.
By way of contrast from the beach, a trip inland to the magnificent Picos de Europa range is highly recommended. This is dramatic and wild mountain scenery, and one of the last refuges of the European brown bear. The site team will be pleased to help and advise on routes and trails for motoring, hiking and biking through the Picos. Back on the coast, Santander is a sophisticated port town with good facilities and a pleasant spot for an evening stroll.
Facilities at Camping Las Hortensias
Two adequate and clean sanitary blocks, one with WCs only, the other with open plan washbasins and showers. Washing machine and dryer. Basic motorhome services. Small supermarket. Bar with terrace overlooking beach. Basic restaurant (campers can use the hotel restaurant with a discount), snack bar and takeaway. TV in the bar. Play area. Football pitch, Tennis court, Gas and charcoal barbecues only. WiFi.
Directions to Camping Las Hortensias
The A8/E2 motorway heading west from Santander becomes the N634. Turn off at Playa de La Franca and the site is clearly signposted.
