Friesland

Friesland is a unique province where Frisian is spoken and written widely alongside Dutch. The many lakes are a Mecca for tourists and not just lovers of watersports.

Friesland has a strong agricultural history, with a vast network of canals, ditches and streams dividing the fields and pastures. These lead not only to magnificent Frisian lakes, picturesque villages and beautiful countryside vistas but also to the 11 Frisian cities with designated historical status. Typical of the Frisian landscape are its strong vertical elements – steeples, windmills, masts and sails; the vast tracts of land and enormous skies are among its main attractions, together with the forests of Gaasterland and the cliffs of the IJsselmeer. But do not forget the four islands in the Waddenzee that also belong to this province: Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, all accessible by ferry from the mainland.

The 11 Frisian cities are all worth a visit. The historic Hanseatic Bolsward, the pilgrimage town of Dokkum, the former university city of Franeker, the fishing town of Harlingen, the picturesque Hindeloopen, the canal city IJlst, the capital
Leeuwarden, small Sloten, bustling lakeside Sneek, the old Stavoren and the picturesque town Workum. Moving from city to city, you will take in the many cultural and historical sights while being captivated by some of the most beautiful corners of the Frisian countryside.

Places of interest

Leeuwarden: a city with 575 national monuments, home to ‘De Elfstedentocht’, the traditional 200 km. skating tour – there is also an alternative route for cyclists.

Schiermonnikoog: island and national park, with only a few areas closed to the public. Feel the wind in your hair and savour the tang of the tidal flats.

Hindeloopen: city surrounded by water on three sides, with charming narrow streets, bridges, shops, canals and a popular marina.

Makkum: known worldwide for its pottery – the oldest in the Netherlands.

Moddergat: 50 small fishermen’s cottages are a feature of this picturesque town.

Attractions

The Fries Museum, Leeuwarden: the largest regional museum in the Netherlands, combining art, culture and history under one roof.
