In the southwest corner of Friesland, close to the northern shore of the IJsselmeer, Camping De Wite Burch underwent major rebuilding and remodelling for the 2014 season. Improvements include a new restaurant, shop and an excellent indoor play pavilion. There are 300 pitches, of which 60 are for tourers, all equipped with electricity connections (10A), water, waste water, TV connection and free WiFi. There are 12 chalets and three trekkers cabins for hire, the remaining pitches being occupied by seasonal units. The nearby coastal village of Stavoren is a watersports centre and has a few restaurants.

The area has numerous small towns and villages to explore, including Balk and Oudemirdum towards the interior, and Hindeloopen further up the coast towards the open sea. The countryside is littered with waterways and lakes, both large and small, so walkers and cyclists should be in their element. Further north still are the towns of Sneek and Bolsward, and beyond them lies the historic city of Leeuwarden, capital of the province of Friesland and well worth a visit. From Bolsward you can turn west then southwest to join the motorway crossing the mouth of the IJsselmeer into North Holland or south to Amsterdam.

Modern, heated Sanitary block includes showers and dishwashing (on payment), facilities for babies and accessible facilities, laundry room with washing machine and dryer. Shop (15/3-31/10). Restaurant serving reasonably priced hot and cold dishes. Large playground with new adventure equipment. Table tennis. Sports field. Animal corner. Bicycle hire. Organised activities for children and families in high season.

Directions to Recreatiepark De Wite Burch

Bakhuizen is 54 km. southwest of Leeuwarden. From A7 motorway from Amsterdam after crossing IJselmeer take exit 17 (Bolsward) and head south on N359. After 21 km. turn southwest to Bakhuizen; turn left at garage, then left and left again (signed De Maren); at T-junction turn left to site (signed).
