International Camping Village
This site is in an ideal location, being directly across the road from the beach and a short distance from the town. The pitches, all with water and electricity, are laid out in a grid pattern, divided by trees which give shade. Additional shade is provided by overhead netting. The main building and the toilet blocks are dated but clean. The town of Praia a Mare is busy, serving a wide area of hinterland. It has a one-way main street with a broad, shady pedestrianised area alongside, lined with shops and cafés.
Villaggio Camping Lungomare
Villaggio Camping Lungomare, a small, family-run site, is conveniently located near the town of Cropani Marina. The site features 100 well-laid-out pitches, each with 6A electricity and water points nearby. Most pitches are shaded by tall pine trees, providing a cool and comfortable camping experience.
Villaggio Turistico Mare Blu
Mare Blu is a large site with lots of watersports activities and an open feel to the site, and is aimed at Italian families spending their holidays by the sea. This is a good site for a short stay to get a taste of the Italian way of camping, or a transit site whilst passing as it is one of the best in the area with many amenities. The 100 touring pitches are flat with some grass, 40 have electricity (3A) and most enjoy shade from trees. There is beach access under the railway line and the fine sand provides a safe area for children.
Camping Villaggio Mimosa
In the southernmost province of Italy, Calabria, Villaggio Camping Mimosa has a great location on the Tyrrhenian Sea. This area is also known as the green coast of Calabria, and it shows in the exceptional landscapes and beautiful beaches. Sicily is easily accessible from the site, as is the unique volcanic island of Stromboli. There are several small villages near the site, such as Rosarno and Nicotera.
Camping Pineta di Sibari
Calabria was immortalised in the drawings of Edward Lear who, travelling on a donkey in 1847, was transfixed by the landscape. Camping Pineta di Sibari is on the Ionian Sea coast and provides 500 touring pitches, all with electricity (4-6A), under pine and eucalyptus trees. Most are of a good size and many have sea views. The large sandy beach stretches for miles in both directions and the backdrop is the mountains of the Pollino National Park. This is a rural area and is away from the industrial areas found further south along this coast. Karin Rudolph runs a happy site where peace and quiet are prime features.
Camping Calypso
Camping Calypso is a simple family run site, situated beside the Ionian Sea and with direct access to long, sandy beaches. There are 96 pitches available for touring on level hardstandings with 3A electricity and some have wonderful views. Good shade is provided by mature trees. On-site facilities include a traditional and very pleasant bar, a restaurant and pizza takeaway. A large amphitheatre provides a stage for entertainment in high season and Hawaiian nights are organised on the beach. This site is perfectly located for a relaxing holiday with the added advantage of excellent sightseeing if you wish.
Vascellero Villaggio Camping
The superb, irregularly shaped pool with its bar and gelateria are the hub of Vascellero. Signora Franca and her family aim to please their guests, whether it is for summer holidays or skiing in the winter. The camping area just inside the gate is modest, but there are 100 pitches of gravel and sand under artificial shade and giant poplars. The pool area is a delightful place to while away the day and the beach is equally tempting. However these facilities are not normally used by campers and an additional charge is payable. A sophisticated beach bar serves food on terraces overlooking the sea.
Camping Costa Blu
This tiny campsite of just 50 clean, level pitches has remarkable features for its size plus an attractive Italian ambience. This is a great site if you think small is beautiful and it is a cut above the other sites in this area, with very favourable prices in low season. The generously sized pitches (with 3A electricity) are shaded by pines and eucalyptus. The clean beach is just 30 m. through a secure gate and it is excellent for relaxing and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere, to soak up the sun or swim in the cool Ionian sea.
Camping Calabrisella
Camping Villaggio Calabrisella is located within a beautiful pine forest overlooking the sea in the pristine Gulf of Squillace, between Catanzaro Lido and Soverato. With its well-maintained facilities and loads of activities, the site provides the perfect setting for an unforgettable Italian getaway. There are 140 pitches, shaded by trees and located on an area of about 17,000 square metres with direct access to the beach, and some have a sea view. All pitches have an electricity hook-up point of 3/6 amps. Some pitches also have a tap and wastewater drain. There are also apartments available to hire.
Village Camping Marina di Rossano
This is a traditional site with a good pool. There are about 250 pitches, all under tall, shady poplar and eucalyptus trees; cars are parked in a secure area away from the pitches. It is a secluded site and a stretch of sandy/pebbly Blue Flag (2013) beach is reached directly via a tunnel under the road (some road noise). A large power station is visible from the beach and this is fairly close to the site. This is a very modest site which may suit some campers as an overnight stop. We do not consider this site as suitable for those with reduced mobility.
Camping Onda Azzurra
Camping Village Onda Azzurra is on the beautiful Ionian coast, in the middle of the natural amphitheatre of the Sibaritide region, in the shade of a dense pine forest. It is surrounded by the Sila Mountains and the Pollino massif, with countless charming villages. The site has 269 grass/ hardstanding pitches of 50 seasonal pitches and 173 for touring units with 16-amp hook-up points. There are also 46 mobile homes available to hire.
Club Naturista Pizzo Greco
Campeggio Naturista Pizzo Greco is a wooded naturist site a short stroll from the beach and five kilometres from Isola di Capo Rizzuto on the southern coast of Calabria. A bumper crop of facilities on site means pretty much everything you need for a relaxing clothes-free holiday. Sportive types can play games of football, basketball, volleyball or boules, or roam around the site’s own network of paths on foot or by bike, perhaps down to the nearby nudist beach for sunbathing and skinny dipping.

Calabria

The toe of the Italian ‘boot’, Calabria, like its neighbouring region, is a sparsely populated region with unspoilt countryside. The coastline boasts fine, sandy beaches, while the interior features the rugged Aspromonte and Sila mountains, which dominate the landscape.

Cosenza

One of the main towns in the region is Cosenza, which is completely enclosed by mountains – the Sila to the east, the Catena Costiera to the west, separating it from the sea. The Sila massif is divided into three parts: the Sila Greca, Sila Grande and the Sila Piccola. Lying in the Sila Greca are the villages of Santa Sofia, San Sosmo and Vaccarizzo, which come alive during annual festivals held throughout the year. There are ski slopes in the Sila Granda plus numerous lakes, ideal for fishing. Camigliatello is one of the best known resorts here offering winter sports, riding and hiking.

Lastly, Sila Piccola is the region’s most densely forested section, which has been designated National Park status. South of Cosenza along the Tyrrhenian coast is Tropea, whose old town clings to the cliffside, offering superb views of the sea and beaches. There are more sandy beaches nearby at Capo Vaticano, while across on the Ionian coast is the popular resort of Rossano Scalo. Just inland from here is the attractive hilltown of Rossano while further south are the vineyards of Cirò. To the north of Rossano is Sibari, home to the world’s largest archaeological site, covering 1,000 hectares; excavations have revealed evidence of ancient Greek and Roman civilisations.

There are five provinces in Calabria: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio Di Calabria and Vibo Valentia.

CUISINE OF THE REGION

CUISINE OF THE REGION

nduja

Food is largely influenced by Greek cuisine – aubergines, swordfish and sweets made with figs, almonds and honey. Many biscuits and cakes are made in honour of a religious festival or saint’s day; they can be deep fried in oil, soaked in honey or encrusted with almonds. Pasta is popular as are pork and cheeses such as mozzarella and pecorino. Locally produced wines include the Greco di Bianco, a sweet white wine, and those from Cirò. One of the most famous Calabrian ingredients is 'nduja, a spicy spreadable sausage made from pork, chili peppers, and other spices.
