Marche
Lying between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains, Marche boasts a pretty mixture of woods and remote hills, medieval towns and seaside resorts, sandy beaches and sleepy coves, plus the snow-capped peaks of the Monti Sibillini.

Marche is not as well known or publicised as other regions, but despite that it has plenty to offer. The medieval town of Urbino with its spectacular Renaissance palace is one of the highlights, as is Ascoli Piceno, which also boasts a medieval heritage, various churches and an enchanting town square. The dramatic fortress at San Leo is considered to be one of the best, while nearby San Marino is Europe’s oldest republic. A tiny area with no customs regulations, its borders are just seven miles apart at its widest point. The republic has its own mint and army and produces its own postage stamps. South of Ancona, the regional capital, and overlooked by the dramatic white cliffs of Monte Cónero, is the Cónero Riviera, an impressive stretch of coast with small beaches, coves and picturesque little resorts, including Portonovo, Sirolo and Numana.
Along the coast is Loreto, one of Italy’s most popular pilgrimage destinations, and more beaches can be found at San Benedetto del Tronto. Further inland, near the Verdicchio wine-producing hilltop villages around Jesi, is the Grotte di Frasassi, one of Europe’s largest accessible cave networks. And the mountainous region of Monti Sibillini in the south offers good walking trails and stunning views.
There are four provinces in Marche: Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Macerata and Pesaro e Urbino.

Cuisine of the region

The region is best known for its Verdicchio wine although it does produce a variety of others.
