Located in woodland and on dunes along a two-kilometre stretch of sandy beach, just east of the attractive little town of Noirmoutier on the island of the same name, this could be a paradise for those who enjoy a simple campsite in a natural setting. On land belonging to France’s forestry commission, this site is operated by Huttopia, whose aim is to adapt to the environment rather than take it over. On site there are 488 touring pitches, all of which have electric hook up points (10A), and are situated among the pine trees and accessed along tracks. Those on the sand dunes have fantastic views across the Baie de Bourgneuf. They cost a few euros extra – if you are lucky enough to get one. Some pitches may experience noise from a nearby bar.

Cars are only allowed in these areas on arrival and departure. No mobile homes exist, but Huttopia has installed 100 large, well-equipped canvas tents on wooden bases to rent. Nearby are salt marshes, an aquarium and a water theme park, and there are opportunities to walk, cycle, sail and windsurf. The little town of Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile is just two kilometres away, so walking is possible if you feel energetic.

Alternatively, in high season, there is a shuttle bus from the campsite entrance into town every 15 minutes during the day. The site is next to a wildlife sanctuary, so birds abound. A bridge reaches the island, but the more adventurous can still do it the old way and cross the causeway – le Passage du Gois – at low tide.

Directions to Camping Huttopia Noirmoutier

The Ile de Noirmoutier is 70 km. southwest of Nantes. At La Barre-de-Monts, take D38 across bridge to island and continue 20 km. to Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile. Go through town (narrow streets!) past three sets of traffic lights and at roundabout turn right following blue signs to Campings. Site is ahead at roundabout in 2 km. Do not use sat nav.
