This excellent and spacious, family-run site is set on the grounds of a 19th-century château. It is a great campsite when you’re travelling via Calais as it is quite close to the Channel ports and tunnel, providing overnight accommodation and a range of facilities for more extended stays.

There are 110 touring pitches, with 10A electricity hook-ups and 31 hardstanding. These are interspersed with 20 privately owned mobile homes and caravans, with a further 18 for hire. Trees and hedging delineate most pitches. Mature trees form the site's perimeter, through which there is access to woodland walks. Even when the site is busy, there is still a sense of space with large green areas free of caravans and tents.

The World War Two Blockhaus, a V1 launch site, is worthy of a visit, as is La Coupole at Saint Omer, which also dates from this period and is equally fascinating. There is a market at Watten on Fridays and at Saint Omer on Saturdays. Boat trips on the pretty Audomarais marshes are a peaceful way to spend an afternoon.

Two sanitary blocks with good showers and some washbasins in cubicles. Good facilities for babies and accessible facilities. Laundry facilities. Motorhome services. Bar, grill restaurant (booking highly recommended) and takeaway (start May - mid Sept). Swimming pools (start may Mid - Sept). Playground with a bouncy castle. Multisports court. Tennis. Table tennis tables. Pétanque. Outdoor fitness equipment. Room for children. Charcoal and Gas barbecues are accepted. WiFi over site (charged).

Directions to Château du Gandspette

From Calais follow D943 (St Omer) for 25 km. Southeast of Nordausques take D221 (east). Follow site signs for 5-6 km. From Dunkirk ferry follow signs for St Omer D300. At Watten roundabout exit right (Gandspette) following site signs.
