Alan Rogers Review of Camping Portuondo
This site has an attractive restaurant, bar and terrace taking full advantage of the wonderful views across the ocean and estuary. Set amongst gardens, the 75 touring pitches are mainly for tents and small vans, but there are eight larger pitches at the lower levels for medium-sized motorhomes. Access to these is a little difficult as the road is very steep and there is no turning space.
The site is mostly terraced, with tent pitches split, one section for your unit, the other for your car and there is some shade. Most are slightly sloping and all have 6A electricity (some may need long leads). In high season (July/August) it is essential to ring to book your space.
Above the larger sanitary block a covered area with long benches, makes a perfect picnic or barbecue area for occupants of tents in periods of rain. There is a stylish, safe swimming pool in the lower area of the site with accessible toilet facilities. We stress that this site is on a very steep incline. A footpath bisects the site and there is road and rail noise in some areas. With its mostly small pitches, in high season the site is popular with surfers and young people without children. English is spoken and the friendly owner, Imanol, and his staff are keen to help.
Facilities at Camping Portuondo
Two toilet blocks include mostly British WCs and a baby room. One block with accessible facilities. A reader reports poor cleaning and maintenance during their visit. Washing machines and dryers. Motorhome services. Shop (seasonal). Bar and two restaurants, all open to public (seasonal, closed Mondays in low season). Takeaway (seasonal). Swimming pools (seasonal). Free WiFi over part of the site. Barbecue area. Torches may be useful.
Directions to Camping Portuondo
Mundaka is 35 km. northeast of Bilbao. From A8 (San Sebastián-Bilbao) take exit 18 and follow signs for Gernika on BI635. Continue on BI2235 towards Bermeo. Site is on right approaching Mundaka. Take care as this is a sharp turn with a steep access. Road signs do not permit turning left to site.
