This campsite is situated at the western end of the Ile de Ré near the Balaines lighthouse and La Conche beach, considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. This is an attractive, well-maintained, spacious site on different levels, occupying a good position close to the long golden sandy beach. It has 199 pitches of which 164 are for touring (120 with 10A electricity) and the remainder are occupied by mobile homes. They are level, mostly open and easily accessible, with some of a generous size. This end of the island is quieter and less crowded than the eastern part and the whole island has a network of paths for walkers and cyclists.

This is a good base to explore the island’s many places of interest, such as the ornithological park, the salt marshes and the charming little ports, each with its own character. The lighthouse, just a short walk away, is an historical monument surrounded by pleasant gardens with a museum and the original lighthouse tower dating from 1682. It is worth climbing to the top of the lighthouse on a good day just for the views. The island’s capital, Saint Martin, is of historical interest having fortifications created by Vauban; it also offers a good range of shops, restaurants and bars surrounding the marina.

Three modern sanitary blocks (two recently renovated) have washbasins in cubicles, controllable showers and excellent accessible facilities. New laundry room with washing machines, dryers and ironing. Snack bar (7/7-25/8). Small shop (15/6-15/9). Takeaway food (July/Aug). Boules. Play area. Organised activities for children in July/Aug. Minigolf. TV room. WiFi over part of site (free). Bicycle hire. No charcoal barbecues outside communal area.

Directions to Camping les Baleines

Cross to island from La Rochelle and take D201/D735 to Ars-en-Ré and Phare des Baleines. When you turn towards the lighthouse, look out for Camping de la Plage on your right and turn left into road opposite (rue du Chaume/rue de la Madeleine). Continue ahead for 500 m. to third crossroads; site is along track to right.
