Alan Rogers Review
Le Castel Camping de La Bien-Assise is a mature and well-developed campsite in the grounds of a country house dating back to the 1500s. There are around 200 grassy pitches here, including 4 with hardstanding, mainly set among mature trees with others on a newer field. They're connected by surfaced, and gravel roads and are of a good size (up to 300 sq.m), with well-maintained shrubs and hedging dividing most of the pitches. The old outbuildings have been sensitively restored and converted over the years to create wonderful modern facilities, notably a superb restaurant.
Being close to Calais, the Channel Tunnel exit, and Boulogne makes this a good stopping point en route, but La Bien-Assise is well worth a longer stay to explore the beautiful Opal Coast. It is a very popular site which is also used by tour operators but is well managed, and there are no adverse effects.
The château, farm and mill now form the focal point for the site. Former farm buildings house the facilities and pool complex, with the entrance to a more formal and excellent restaurant, La Ferme Gourmande, in the mellow farmyard opposite a dovecote. The courtyard also houses a small delicatessen style shop selling local produce. A local market is nearby and walks from the site include the ten minute walk into the village for a drink or meal close to the remains of ancient walls and a spring-fed pool in the centre. Reception opens for long hours to meet the needs of those crossing the Channel.
