In the heart of Périgord Vert to the north of the Dordogne, this former intercommunal campsite is now operated by the Semitour Périgord group. Located on the shore of a lake in the Parc Régional Périgord-Limousin, this small, simple site offers 41 large pitches, some with partial shade, and most with a gentle slope. All fully serviced with 10A Europlug. The lake, which was created by the monks of a 12th-century abbey, is now used for watersports. The village of Saint-Estèphe has a bakery and a small supermarket, whilst Nontron, capital of Périgord Vert, offers a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants, a weekly market, and a 12th-century château.

Nontron is just one of many interesting towns and villages in the area. Brantôme is an attractive town whose outstanding feature is the Benedictine Abbey overlooking the River Dronne; it was founded by Charlemagne in 769, destroyed by the Vikings a hundred years later and rebuilt in the tenth and fifteenth centuries; its Romanesque bell-tower is one of the oldest in France. Historic Rochechouart has an impressive thirteenth-century château, whilst Thiviers is the region’s capital for foie gras.

One clean toilet block is centrally located and has good accessible facilities. Washing machine and dryer. Activities room. TV room. Table tennis, volleyball, tennis, boules and football. Play area on beach. Supervised lake swimming (July/Aug). Fishing and canoeing. Snack bar, bar and gourmet restaurant (in a former mill) beside the lake. The lake beach is classified as ‘Handiplage’, fully equipped and adapted for those with reduced mobility.

Directions to Camping du Grand Etang de Saint Estèphe

St Estèphe is 60 km. southwest of Limoges. The most straightforward route is probably from N141 25 km. west of Limoges. Head south on D675 for 47 km. through Rochechouart to village of Augignac; at crossroads at southern end of village turn west towards St Estèphe (site signed). Lake and site are to right in 2.3 km.
