Alan Rogers Review of Camping du Château
The location of this site is really quite spectacular, lying in the shadow of the Château of William the Conqueror, within walking distance of the historic town of Falaise in the heart of Normandy. The site itself is small, with only 60 pitches (most with 10A electricity) either beside the little river, on a terrace above or on gently sloping ground. There are plans for some new terracing which will provide more level pitches. With trees and hedges providing some shade as well as open grassed areas, this site has a pleasant, rather intimate feel about it. Charges are reasonable and the reception friendly.
Apart from the well-known castle, Falaise was a famous place during WW2 when the Allies virtually surrounded the German army here. A unique new museum (Mémorial des Civils dans la Guerre) is opening in June 2016, in an historic building next to the château, commemorating the civilians who suffered and died during this period. The town has two other interesting museums, including one dedicated to automatons, and also offers a range of shops, bars and restaurants. The area is also famous for its cheeses (notably Camembert, Livarot and Pont-l’Evêque) and its apples – especially those made into cider, pommeau and Calvados. Nearby lies the green countryside of La Suisse Normande which can be enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and motorists alike. Days out further afield could include Caen, Pegasus Bridge and the Normandy beaches or Lisieux with its impressive basilica.

Directions to Camping du Château
Falaise is 40 km. southeast of Caen. Site is on western side of town and, to avoid driving through the centre, it is advisable to approach from the north. From north on N158 or south on A88 leave at exit 10 for Falaise and head south on D658. Cross large roundabout and in 600 m. at second mini-roundabout bear right onto Voie Panoramique (D243B) signed to château and site. In 800 m. turn sharp left down to campsite on right in 200 m.
