This campsite occupies a scenic location on the River Waal. It has 160 pitches in total, half of which are situated immediately beside the river with fabulous views. There are 25 permanent and 60 seasonal pitches, plus 70 for touring with 6A electricity, water and drainage. A separate field, with a fish pond, is available for short stays. The playground with open-air chess and trampoline is popular with children. De Grote Altena is ideal for nature lovers who enjoy peace and space. The attractive cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen are both within easy reach.

De Grote Altena lies at the heart of the Betuwe, a typically Dutch region with rolling meadows and river dykes. The site is well maintained with grass pitches and some mature trees. A playground ofers open-air chess, and a trampoline is popular with children. The site is popular with anglers, offering a small fishing pond as well as direct access to the Waal. Cycling along the river on the Polder Dyke is also a favoured activity. There is a snack bar on site with a terrace offering fine river views. Off site, the De Altena restaurant appears to be well regarded. Fresh bread can be ordered on site and the nearest village (Oosterhout) has two shops. The nearest supermarket is in Elst.

Directions to Camping De Grote Altena

The site is 9 km. northwest of Nijmegen on the northern banks of the Waal. From Arnhem or Nijmegen follow A325, and leave at Ressen Tiel/Rotterdam exit (A15). After 2.6 km. take exit 38 to Elst/Oosterhout. Turn left after 500 m. at petrol station, turn right, then follow signs to site.
