This site stands at the gateway, via Münstertal, to the Black Forest. Not very high up itself, it is just at the start of the long road climb which leads to the top of Belchen, one of the highest summits of the forest. The site has plenty of shade for the 230 pitches (182 for touring units), all with electrical connections (10/16A, some 2-pin) and TV (100 also have water). The site is not “at it’s best”. It had a feel of being run down and lacking ongoing basic maintenance. The sanitary blocks are very dated, dark and thus appeared dirty. Although the site was full most of the facilities were locked, e.g. Sauna, Pool, Fitness. These were opened when asked. The Toilet area in Block 1 had inadequate ventilation, and all the building had a stale smell.

The shop/Café had very limited opening times. The bar consisted of taking a drink from the limited selection in the shops fridge and they would give you a glass at the till. The Café had a very limited menu, but the food was tasty. Plans have been submitted to remodel the site.

Charges include hot water and use of the inviting indoor pool. Staufen is a pleasant little town with character. A local train runs past the site during the day. Visitors are entitled to a Konus Card, giving free bus and train travel throughout the Black Forest.

Facilities

Three sanitary blocks are heated and have free hot water, individual washbasins (six in private cabins), plus 21 family cabins with WC, basin and shower (some on payment per night for exclusive use). Accessible facilities, Dog shower. Washing machine. Gas supplies. Motorhome services. Shop (1/3-31/10). Bar (all year). Snacks and takeaway (1/3-31/10). Indoor pool. Sauna and solarium. Tennis. Playground with barbecue area. Table tennis and pool room. Bicycle, fun bike and skate hire. WiFi (charged).

Location

Take autobahn exit for Bad Krozingen, south of Freiburg, and continue to Staufen. Site is southeast of the town and signed, across an unmanned local railway crossing near the entrance.
