Seasonova Camping l'Étang des Bois is set in Vieilles-Maisons-sur-Joudry in rural Loiret on the banks of the eponymous lake in the middle of one of the largest forests in France. It’s a real back-to-nature sort of place, with a good dash of daily activity thrown in for outdoorsy families. The site is right next to a leisure centre on the Étang des Bois, where there is supervised swimming and water sports in high season. Other activities to keep you occupied and out in the fresh air include mölkky (Finnish throwing games), tree climbing, walking and cycling tracks through the forest – bike rental on site if you have left yours behind. You can also fish in the lake (permit required and sold on site) or challenge the children to a round of mini golf. 140 spacious pitches await you, 40 occupied by seasonal units, all with electric hook-ups 10amp and sheltered from the sun by mature oak trees. There are also 9 cottages and safari tents available to hire. Catering is taken care of too, with a snack bar for daytime top-ups to keep everybody happy.

No visit to the Loire is complete without visiting a château, so how about a visit to Château de Sully-sur-Loire (20 minutes’ drive) for tours of lavish apartments and pinnacled towers. Châteaux de Chamerolles (35 minutes) is also worth a peek for its Renaissance-era gardens and exhibits on the history of perfume. Visit Orleans (40 minutes), where you can learn about a legendary character in French history at the Maison de Jeanne d’Arc, admire the vast Gothic cathedral and take a walk alongside the River Loire to paddle from the city beach at Île Charlemagne. There is plenty to see in the Loire countryside too. Try the Belvédère des Caillettes viewing tower or take peaceful woodland walks at the Arboretum des Grandes Bruyères. For rose beds and Japanese water gardens, head for La Javelière (all half an hour) or learn about local crafts at the Musée Poterie et Forêt à Nibelle (20 minutes).

Directions to Seasonova Camping l’Etang des Bois

From the A10/E5 near Orleans leave at junction 14 to join the D2060 towards St-Jean-de-Braye. Next at a junction, take the D592 exit towards Gien. Now turn left onto D88 signed Vieilles-Maisons-sur-Joudry. Continue to follow D88 until you reach the lake on the edge of Vieilles-Maisons-sur-Joudry. The site is then on the right off this road.
