Alan Rogers Review
Salema EcoCamp is an attractive and peaceful valley site. The campsite was formerly known as Parque de Campismo Quinta dos Carriços. On arrival, a traditional tiled Portuguese-style entrance leads you down a steep incline into this excellent, well-maintained site, which has a village atmosphere. Much of the site has been recently redeveloped, along with the introduction of environmental elements such as solar heating for the water, using locally sourced, organic produce in the restaurant and selling eco-products in the shop. The campsite is spread over two valleys (which are real sun traps), with many of the 500 partially terraced pitches marked and divided by trees and shrubs (oleanders and roses). Others are less well defined among trees. There are 6/16A electricity connections to over 300 pitches. A small stream (sometimes dry) meanders through the site.
A very popular site for summer and winter sun worshippers, it is within easy driving distance of a number of attractive resorts. The village and beach at Salema are within walking distance down the road and the many fine beaches in the region provide ample opportunities for diving, swimming and fishing. To the west is the town of Sagres, associated with Henry the Navigator, and the Cabo de São Vicente, the headland at ‘O Fim do Mundo’ (Portugal’s wild and unspoilt Land’s End). To the west are several fashionable little resorts and then the bustling yet historic town of Lagos.
Three sanitary blocks are equipped with showers, private washing cubicles. Washing machines and dryers. Bar/ Restaurant and a shop where you can find a variety of organic and bioproducts. 1.5km to Salema Beach where kayaking, surfing are available. Indoor badminton. Activity and entertainment programmes (during school holidays). Riding centre. Bicycle hire. Canoe trips. Fishing. Segways. Zip wire. Internet access and WiFi (charged). Shuttle service to the beaches. Booking service for island trips.
