Alan Rogers Review of Lochranza Campsite

Lochranza Campsite lies amid mountain and coastal scenery at the north end of the beautiful Isle of Arran on Scotland's west coast. As the most southerly of Scottish islands, Arran is easily reached by regular ferry sailings from Ayrshire. The site itself is close to the ferry crossing to the Kintyre peninsula, and the place makes an inspirational beginning to a Scottish tour. The area is rich in wildlife: red deer roam the site and golden eagles soar overhead. The site is perfect for peace and relaxation, watching wildlife, and is a great starting point for a wide range of activities, including walking and cycling.

The site occupies two acres of flat grassland between a burn, Chalmadale Waters, and Lochranza Golf Course. There are 60 level pitches for tents and campervans, as well as six motorhome or caravan pitches on gravel hard standings. Electric hookups are available for most pitches. There are 5 camping pods to hire. Arran measures approximately 20 miles in length, 10 miles in width, and has a circumference of 55 miles. The roads are rural, so it is important to drive with care and park considerately.

The site is half an hour from the Arran island hub of Brodick. It is a great striking out point for iconic walks, including Fairy Dell (4 miles), which takes in Hutton’s Unconformity, where 18th-century geologist James Hutton proved that the world was much older than thought at the time.

Across the road is the Lochranza Distillery, home of the Arran Single Malt, and a short drive from Lochranza pier, where you can take the CalMac ferry from Lochranza to Claonaig on the Kintyre peninsula for a day trip or to set off on an island-hopping adventure. For one of Arran’s best sandy beaches, it’s a 10-minute drive to Sannox, where spiky mountains plunge into a cuticle-shaped bay.

Directions to Lochranza Campsite

The Isle of Arran is accessible via two Calmac ferry routes. The first departs from Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire coast and arrives at Brodick. Ardrossan offers excellent road connections and public transport links. The second route operates from Claonaig on Kintyre directly to Lochranza.

Upon leaving the ferry terminal, turn right and proceed north. After passing through Sannox, the road rises over open hillsides before descending into Lochranza. You will pass the Isle of Arran Distillery on your left. Shortly afterwards, on your right, you will see signage for the Lochranza Golf Course and site. Turn into the car park, and the site gate will be directly ahead.
