Alan Rogers Review
Camping Waldfrieden is surrounded by meadows, mountains and forests in a beautiful green valley in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate). With the green surroundings, you might almost forget that you are camping close to the touristy Saarburg. In just a few minutes by bike, you can be in the cosy, historic city centre with nice restaurants and beautiful sights. On the gently sloping grounds, there are 57 touring pitches electric hook-up point 16amp. There are also 55 seasonal pitches. You are advised to use a category B pitch if you have a caravan and awning. The hedges and bushes that delineate the pitches provide plenty of privacy. Those who would like to come and spend the night without their own touring unit can rent the 3 mountain huts, rooms or apartments.
As the sun sets, listen out for the owls that regularly make themselves heard on the grounds. Especially in the summer months, the site is a real delight for children and their parents. Have a dance at the children's disco, make some crafts or join in with the lantern parade. There is a playground, and if the weather is not so great, you can also play inside with your new friends. Snacks and drinks are served on the patio, but you can also use the grill and fire pit. If you fancy a walk, do inquire at the reception about guided hikes. Those who want to swim can walk to the municipal swimming pool, which is about two kilometres away.
Saarburg was founded in 964 by Count Siegfried of Luxembourg with the acquisition of the mountain Churbelun and the construction of the castle high above the Saar. Saarburg is surrounded by forests and vineyards and is crossed by the river Leuk. A special attraction is the approximately 20m high waterfall in the middle of the city, which plunges down to the valley between half-timbered houses and baroque buildings and drives the mill wheels of the former Hackenberg mill. In Germany you may have to deal with so-called "Umweltzones". The purpose of these environmental zones is to promote air quality. You may only enter these areas if your car has an environmental sticker, buy before you leave home.
