Alan Rogers Review of Camping les Murets
On the bank of the Ourthe River, Les Murets is a peaceful, traditional family campsite in the countryside south of Liège. There are 80 grass touring pitches, separated mainly by hedges and with mature trees giving plenty of shade and an open field for campers. A few pitches are seasonal, but there are no mobile homes or chalets and only one caravan to rent. The River Ourthe, as well as being ideal for swimming and fishing, is a haven for nature lovers, with kingfishers and otters among its residents.
The area offers plenty of walking, cycling, climbing, and diving opportunities, and the campsite makes special provision for hikers. The campsite provides fresh wood-fired pizza to take away and enjoy on their terrace daily during high season and sells Belgian beers and ice cream, too! Across the river is the attractive little village of Esneux with a few shops, restaurants and bars and a weekly market. Historical Liège has, it is claimed, the largest pedestrianised shopping area in Europe and is easily reached by road or rail.
Lovers of flea-markets are also, apparently, well catered for locally. The caves of Comblain-au-Pont and Remouchamps are well worth visiting, the latter offering a boat-ride on what is described as the longest underground river in the world. The less energetic may choose simply to explore the attractive Ardennes countryside by car.
