Alan Rogers Review
A very rural, rustic site, les Chelles is situated in the Parc Naturel Livradois, 25 km. south of Thiers. It is ideal for nature lovers and those seeking a quiet retreat. There are 56 pitches with 39 slightly sloping, grassy pitches for touring, most with views over the surrounding wooded hills (minimum 10A electricity, long leads advised). The distant mountains, visible from the site, can be snow-covered for up to six months of the year. Pitches are naturally laid out on woodland terraces but not ideal for those with walking difficulties or for large or underpowered units due to the hilly terrain. Ensure you have stocked up on provisions prior to arrival as this is a very remote site.
The simple bar and restaurant offers a daily menu, snacks and takeaway and is open all season. There are 17 mobile homes/chalets on-site to rent all year. There are many marked walks and challenging cycle routes close by. At nearby Olliergues, in July and August, L'Ile Aux Crayon tells the history of handmade pencils and crayons. The site is also not far from Maison de la Fourme D'Ambert – the story of the cheese of the same name. The Lac D'Aubusson offers riding and canoeing.
Centrally placed basic toilet block. Accessible facilities. Washing machine and dryer. Motorhome services. Bar/restaurant with TV. Bread to order. Heated swimming and paddling pools (High season). Small play area. Tennis. Boules. Small fishing lake. Some activities for younger children, bike rides (high season). Free WiFi near bar.
Olliergues is on D906 25 km. south of Thiers. On entering Olliergues bear left up hill, D37. Shortly turn sharp left on D87. In 4.5 km. at church turn right and shortly left to site. Well signed from Olliergues.Link to campsite location map on google
