Alan Rogers Review

Five minutes from Kenmare Bay, The Peacock is a unique location for campers who appreciate the natural world, where disturbance to nature is kept to a minimum. This five-acre site offers simple camping facilities. Located on the Ring of Beara, bordering the counties of Cork and Kerry, visitors will be treated with hospitality by a Dutch couple, Bert and Klaske van Bavel, almost more Irish than the Irish, who have made Ireland their home and run the site with their family. The variety of accommodation at Beara Camping includes a hostel, caravan holiday homes, secluded hardstanding pitches with electricity and level grass areas for tenting.

In addition, there are cabins sleeping two or four people and hiker huts (van conversions) sleeping two, to avoid a damp night or to dry out. Bert and Klaske love to share with visitors the unspoiled natural terrain, its wildlife, the sheltered community campfire and advice on the walking and hiking routes in the area. The homely restaurant, open in July and August, boasts appetising and homemade food including breakfast with fresh bread each morning. Nearby are the Ring of Beara, stone circles, the Healy Pass, Ardea Castle, Derreen Gardens and the fishing town of Castletownbere.

Three small and basic blocks provide toilets, washbasins and free hot showers. Laundry service for a small fee. Campers’ kitchens and sheltered eating area. Restaurant and takeaway (July/Aug). Pets are not accepted. WiFi on part of site.
