Drenthe

From traditional small villages to vibrant cities, Drenthe embraces a diverse landscape. With a rich history, Neolithic stones, festivals, and friendly, hospitable people – no wonder it’s so popular with Dutch holidaymakers.

Drenthe, unlike many other parts of the Netherlands, has been a sparsely populated rural area since medieval times. Except for some industries in Assen and Emmen, the lands in Drenthe are mainly used for farming. This province is epitomised by stillness and an affinity with nature, which affords many opportunities for hiking, cycling and boating. Quiet though it may be, you’re never far from one of the lively old cities with their vibrant shops and restaurants.

Drenthe is divided into three regions, each with its own special character. In northern and central Drenthe, the large lakes – Leekstermeer, Paterswoldsmeer and Zuidlaardermeer – with their many attractions, are popular with watersports enthusiasts. In southwestern Drenthe, the Dwingelderveld and the Drents-Friese Wold National Parks, with thousands of acres of fens, heathland, and forest, will capture the imagination of walkers and cyclists alike. In this area, there are constant reminders of the ancient landscapes as you experience everything that the countryside has to offer. Nearby are the flourishing cities of Meppel and Hoogeveen for more lively pursuits. And finally, in the southeast, there are the immense moorland areas with their many dolmens reflecting man’s presence here before the Bronze Age.
