D-Day

The 6th of June 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, an opportune time to reflect on the historic events that unfolded along the Normandy coast in the days that followed.

Normandy is synonymous with many things: 1066 and all that. The D-Day Landing Beaches. Calvados and orchards. But its seafood is a stand out feature of this slow paced, bucolic region.

France has been shaped over the centuries by countless events. Some well documented, others less immediately obvious. But all played a part in creating a France that we know and love today.

Like many a neighbourly relationships, the French and British have not always seen eye to eye. It’s not simply a case of not getting on, more a question of never-ending competition, perhaps the ultimate in one-upmanship or keeping up with the Joneses.

France has been at the epicentre of major conflicts throughout history and, for a country made up of such beautiful and tranquil landscapes, it has seen more than its fair share of bloodshed.
