Alan Rogers Review of PlusCamp Sandvik
Sandvik is a compact, small site in Gaupne, close to the Nigardsbreen Glacier and the spectacular Rv55 high mountain road from Lom to Sogndal. It provides 50 touring pitches, 48 with electrical connections (8/16A), arranged in an orchard setting either side of a road. A large supermarket, post office, banks and tourist information are all within a level 500 m. stroll. A café in the reception building is open in summer for drinks and meals and the small shop sells groceries, ices, soft drinks and sweets. Fjord fishing is nearby, as are guided tours of the Nigardsbreen and Jostedalsbreen glaciers.
At 1,434 m., Sognefjellsvegen (Rv55), a national tourist road, has Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass. A return daytrip to Lom, famous for the Norwegian national stone, thulite, traverses the magnificent, wild mountain scenery in Jotunheimen National Park and passes close to Norway’s highest mountains, Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind both over 2,400 m. (8,000 feet). A shorter drive reveals these peaks, passing blue ice and emerald green lakes, after climbing from Skjolden (15 km) to a viewpoint above the fjord. Also close is the lovely village of Solvorn with a ferry trip which takes you over to Urnes Stave Church.
