Elbdeich Camping Kollmar is wonderful little site just behind the dike at the north side of the river Elbe, about 50 kilometres northwest of Hamburg. Be aware that you pay for your stay on arrival. The owners are such lovely people and have a lot of tips for what to see in the surroundings. The site is formed from two rows of pitches, following the line of the dike. There are lots of sheep on the dike, providing visitors with ample entertainment, especially when you pass through one of the gates and climb onto the dyke. Be prepared to be searched for old bread by sheep if you sit down on the bench. There is a wonderful view from there, and lots to see for 'ship spotters'. The sunsets seen from here are wonderful.

The village of Kollmar is within walking distance (along or on the dike). There is a tiny road going there too. There is a butcher, bakery, a restaurant, café and a hotel. Near the harbour is a little sandy beach, romantically shaded by willows. The site has 80 pitches of which 48 are for touring units with 16amp hook-up point. There is also 1 caravan available to hire.

Directions to Elbdeich Camping Kollmar

From Hamburg take the A23 towards Husum/Heide. Leave the motorway in Elmshorn (exit 14) and follow the signs to Glückstadt/B431. Take the B 431 through Elmhorn and Neuendorf to the large roundabout and turn left to Kollmar. At the second intersection, turn left into Kleine Kirchreihe and drive to the end. There you will see the entrance gate to the site. From Glückstadt take the ferry across the Elbe from Wischhafen to Glückstadt, take the B 431 towards Elmshorn to the large roundabout (there is a grain mill with silos on the left) and turn right here in the direction of Kollmar. Just ignore all signs, because those will take you on small farm roads. At the second intersection, turn left into Kleine Kirchreihe and drive to the end. There you will see the entrance gate to the site.
