Camping U Sommalu is between the west coast of Corsica and the mountains to the north and east. This is a family-friendly site a kilometre from a sandy beach in the mountainside village of Casaglione. A 45-minute drive from Ajaccio it is well situated for a seaside escape in the Gulf of Sagone, with the hinterlands, including waterfalls, mountains and rivers, within reach too. On site you will find a swimming pool with sun loungers for a lazy afternoon and when energy levels are running high, there is an outdoor playground, table football and table tennis. With a picnic and your swimming gear it's an easy 20-minute walk to Le Liamone beach if you fancy a sandy lounge around (or a splendid sunset, if it’s late enough in the day). Handily, there’s a restaurant overlooking the beach and the river too. If you are not staying around for sunset, return to the site and grab a drink from the on-site bar. Conveniently, there is a food shop and bakery on site for any bits you need, plus several shops, restaurants and bars 15 minutes’ walk away. The site has 80 touring pitches and a number of mobile homes, chalets and bungalows to hire.

The only wooded lake in Corsica, Lac de Creno (an hour) is 1310 metres above sea level and dotted with water lilies and rare protected plants. Walk there from Soccia (50 minutes), a peaceful mountainside village. if you would prefer a forest walk the Foret d'Aitone (50 minutes) has thick vegetation in the south of Corsica and it's also home to refreshing natural pools and waterfalls. For a day trip, visit the Gulf of Porto for Ota (an hour and 15 minutes), a seafront town in the hamlet of Porto with gorges, mountain hikes and beaches. Finally, why not try the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Scandola Nature Reserve (two hours).

Directions to Camping U Sommalu

From Ajaccio take the the T21 then T22. Then at a roundabout turn left onto the D81 towards Calvi and Cargèse. About 3 km after the town of Tiuccia, at the junction towards Casaglione, take the D25 on the right and follow for about 800 metres. The entrance to the site is then your left. A journey of 30 kilometres. From Bastia take the T11, T20 through Ponte Leccia, Corté, Bocognano and at a roundabout join the T22. Now at the 5th roundabout turn right and take the D81 towards Calvi and Cargèse. Continue as above.
