Alan Rogers Review
This is probably the most northerly campsite in Finland and makes an excellent stopover en route to North Cape. This is a small site with space for 30 units, on three levels with a small access road sloping down to the river. Electricity points (16A) are available throughout the site but the pitches are unmarked. This area is still largely unpopulated, scattered with only small Sami communities and herds of reindeer. Karigasniemi is a slightly larger town as it is a border post with Norway and is close to both the Kevo Nature reserve and the Lemmenjoki National Park.
Finland has 19 nature reserves covering an area of 1,520 square kilometres, Kevo takes up almost half of that area. The campsite is on the banks of the Tenojoki River and is an excellent base for walking and birdwatching. A little further north you will find Nuvvus-Ailigas, the holy fell of the ancient Sami, which rises to a height of 400 m. above the level of the Teno river. Karigasniemi is at the junction of the 970 with route 92 and is a good base to absorb all that Finnish Lapland has to offer.
Facilities
Sanitary block includes showers, toilets and sauna. Launderette. Kitchen. Reception with TV. Refreshments available in guest house. Play area. Wooden cottages to rent. WiFi.
Location
If travelling south on 970, site is on right as you enter town. If travelling west on the 92, turn right immediately before Norwegian customs point. Site is shortly on left past petrol station. Entrance is quite steep.Campsite Google Map
