Quinta Chave Grande is an attractive, good quality campsite where you will receive a friendly welcome from Jorge and Lidia who look after things for the Dutch and Portuguese owners. It is set in a rural valley with several marked walks, close to many charming old villages, yet only 25 km. from the provincial capital of Viseu with its museums, churches and beautiful old town centre. The spacious site offers 150 unmarked touring pitches, some defined by trees. Electricity (6A) is available to all but long leads may be required. There is a separate terraced area for tents. Torches are essential in some areas. For those who enjoy walking, there are eight marked walking tours starting from the campsite.

They take between 90 minutes and four hours, and each tour provides an opportunity to see some magnificent scenery with the occasional glimpse of wildlife. On a clear day Portugal’s highest mountain can be seen from the site. Excursions are organised and themed evenings are held in the welcoming bar area, including a Portuguese night, a Dutch night and a barbecue in high season. In the nearby villages of Lamas and Vila Nova da Paiva there are shops, bars, restaurants, banks and post offices.

Facilities at Camping Quinta Chave Grande

Two toilet blocks, one traditional with open-style washbasins and controllable showers, the other with four spacious en-suite units with separate toilet and washbasin and large shower room, two equipped for use by visitors with disabilities. Service wash. Water point for motorhomes (full services planned for 2015). No shop but baker calls daily (excl. Sun) and greengrocer twice weekly. Bar (all season). Swimming and paddling pools (1/5-31/9). Fenced play area. Organised events for children and teenagers in July/Aug. Tennis. Boules. WiFi in bar area (free).

Directions to Camping Quinta Chave Grande

Casfreires is 35 km northeast of Viseu. From A25 Guarda-Aveiro road take exit 19, then on the IP5 take exit 17 to join N229 northeast to Sátão. Site is very well signed from here and is 13 km. northeast of Sátão. From north on A24 leave at exit 3 for Viseu then head east on IP5 to exit 17.
