Les Vailhés is a popular municipal site with a wonderful situation on the shores of the Lac du Salagou which is a haven for watersports. Many pitches have views across the lake and the red volcanic rocks are most unusual. Of the 245 pitches, 55 are occupied by seasonal caravans and 190 are for touring, all with electricity (16A); on ground sloping towards the lakeside beach. Most are hedged and there is plenty of shade from a variety of trees. The site is fenced off from the lake but the gates are open during the day.

A sailing school is next to the site offering a range of watersports (including courses) with the opportunity for windsurfing, sailing (including catamarans), canoeing and kayaking, rowing and, of course, swimming and fishing. The area is ideal for walking, riding and cycling (with 17 mountain-bike routes). The nearby town of Lodève is a ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ and there are many megalithic sites in the area, as well as the vineyards and olive plantations of Languedoc. The beaches of the Mediterranean are only an hour’s drive (mostly by free motorway).

Facilities at Camping les Vailhés

Two toilet blocks have good modern showers (unisex in low season), but the remaining facilities are rather Spartan, with unisex washbasins under cover but open to the fresh air, and old-fashioned sinks for dishwashing and laundry (with hot water). Washing machines. Very basic accessible facilities (no grab-rails). Small play area for younger children with climbing wall. Baker calls each morning. Lake amenities (lifeguards July/Aug) and beach café (all season). Windsurfing, sailing, canoes, rowing boats and pedaloes.

Directions to Camping les Vailhés

Lac du Salagou is 50 km. west of Montpellier. From the A75 (Béziers/Clermont-Ferrand) take exit 54 or 55, and follow directions to Lac du Salagou. Then follow site signs to left.
