This small site on the Côte d’Opale is very convenient for the Calais ferries and Eurotunnel as well as being just a few minutes from the A16. The 41 pitches are terraced and set on open ground separated by low privet hedging. There is some shade around the perimeter and all pitches have electricity (6/10A Europlug). Just two kilometres from the beach, the pitches at the top of the site have spectacular views over the coast towards the Channel, Cap Blanc-Nez and the English coastline. Most pitches have hardcore wheel tracks.

With no facilities or activities for children, this site is ideal for those who appreciate peace and quiet. The village of Escalles, an easy walk downhill towards the sea, is located on the D940 coast road between Calais and Boulogne; it has a pleasant hotel, several restaurants and an épicerie (on another campsite but open to the public).

The sandy beach at Cran d’Escalles is a kilometre further on, and there is a car park for the less energetic; Cap Blanc Nez can be reached from here, or by road from Escalles. Head northeast along the coast road and you reach Sangatte and then bustling Calais with its excellent range of shops, bars and restaurants. Going southwest from Escalles you pass through Wissant and a number of other attractive coastal villages, on the way to Cap Gris Nez. The road then takes you through further pleasant villages and past numerous sandy beaches en route to historic Boulogne-sur-Mer. 15 minutes from the Channel Tunnel.

Facilities at Camping les Erables

One small, unisex toilet block, heated in low season, is fairly basic. British style toilets, washbasins (some in cubicles) and pushbutton showers (charged). Accessible facilities. Washing machine and dryer. Motorhome services (charged). Bread available to order. Caravan storage. Ice packs frozen. WiFi to some areas (free). Water points are rather scarce. Security barrier closed till 8am. If you leave early ask for code at reception. American motorhomes, twin axel caravans and pets accepted.

Directions to Camping les Erables

Escalles is 14 km southwest of Calais. Leave A16/E402 (Dunkerque, Calais, Boulogne) at exit 40. Join D243 westbound and pass through village of Peuplingues. After Escalles village sign, take second turning on the left. Turn left at green cycle route No.4 sign (to Wissant) on your left. The site entrance is then 400 m. on the left.
