Camping le Vieux Berger
France, Midi-Pyrénées, Hautes-Pyrénées, Lourdes
Alan Rogers Review
Le Vieux Berger, under new ownership, is a small campsite on the edge of the town and within easy reach of the Sanctuaire Notre Dame de Lourdes, just under two kilometres away. There are views of the Pyrenees from many of the 63 touring pitches, with electricity connections (6/10A) available; trees provide shade and the owners’ aim is to ensure a peaceful, green environment. There is a new separate area for motorhomes with hardstandings and grass verges; open all year, it would be an ideal stopover for visiting Lourdes. A shuttle bus service runs to the entrance of the sanctuary area several times a day in season. The shops, bars and restaurants of the town are within easy reach. There is a little road noise.
Lourdes has an interesting château which houses the Museum of the Pyrenees. From the top of the Pic du Jer, just south of Lourdes, (accessible on foot or by funicular railway) there are spectacular views of the town, of the surrounding countryside and of the Pyrenees beyond. Head south to Argelès-Gazost and on up the valley to Luz-Saint-Sauveur and eventually the spectacular Cirque de Gavarnie. Visit the historic towns of Tarbes or Pau, the latter being the capital of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Sanitary blocks have a mixture of squat and British style WCs, controllable hot showers and accessible facilities. Laundry room with washing machine and dryer. Tourist information. Bread to order (July/Aug). Takeaway (April-Sept). Playground with trampoline. Pétanque. WiFi throughout (free).
Lourdes is 30 km. south of Tarbes. From A64 (La Pyrénéenne) motorway take exit 12 (Lourdes/Tarbes Ouest) and head south on N21 towards Lourdes. In 16 km. at roundabout take third exit D821 (Bagnères) and in 600 m. bear left onto Route de Julos to site on right in 150 m.Link to campsite location map on google
