Alan Rogers Review of Camping Eco-chiocciola
Tucked away in the Apennines in a small village, this interesting little campsite has many surprises. Eco-chiocciola (named after the snail wearing his house on his back) is being developed by the owner Ottavio Mazzanti as a place to enjoy the natural geographic, geological, botanical and zoological features of the area. Comforts such as the swimming pool are designed to offer relaxation when not exploring. The 40 small touring pitches, all with 6A electrical connections, are on level or gently sloping ground with some terraces, many enjoying superb views. This is a peaceful site with a distinctly rustic feel for people who enjoy natural settings. It is best suited to tent campers and small motorhomes.
Ottavio speaks excellent English and there are mementos of his extensive travels in the reasonably priced restaurant, which serves international dishes as well as traditional local Italian. Ottavio has begun to develop many of his unique ideas into features which will entertain and interest his guests, including a guided tour through the adjacent ‘didactic’ park complete with illustrated wayside boards explaining each feature. There is also an orchard with ancient fruits and a garden with kitchen and medicinal herbs. The region is only 60 km. from historic Bologna, the surrounding area is very pretty and there are many areas of interest nearby including the Ferrari gallery at Maranello.
Facilities at Camping Eco-chiocciola
Two refurbished sanitary blocks have some British style WCs and hot showers (a reader reports they do not always work well in high season). Solar panels have been installed. Accessible Facilities. Washing machine. Motorhome services. Restaurant. Bar. Large multipurpose room for entertainment. Swimming pool open afternoons and weekend mornings (23/6-3/9). Tennis and volleyball area as well as a tree house. Bicycle hire. Torches necessary.

From the A1 take Modena South exit through Vignola, Montese, Sesta la Fanano, to Maserno di Montese. Site is 200 m. from the village, well signed.
