The area around Barcelonnette is not high in the holiday popularity table, but it is appealing to those who like dramatic mountain scenery and the more rugged pursuits of mountaineering, mountain biking and white-water canoeing. Few caravanners and motorhome owners find their way in to this mountainous region, but it is popular amongst campers with cycles or motorcycles. In an area where most of the sites are rather crowded and basic, Camping du Plan, a compact site, has fair sized pitches defined by mature trees which provide welcome shade in high summer. Pitches near the road can be fairly noisy during the day.

This is mostly because of motorcycles passing on their way to tackle Col d’Allos. Eight kilometres from Barcelonnette is the other infamous mountain pass, the Col de la Bonette, which is the highest paved road in Europe. This pass is really only suitable for two wheeled vehicles. There is a motorhome service point at Barcelonnette airport, and from there the brave can take a brief powered or gliding tour of the surrounding mountains.

Facilities at Camping du Plan

The toilet block is old fashioned with mostly Turkish style toilets, but it is kept very clean. The bar, which doubles as reception, serves breakfasts and fairly basic but filling evening menu. Site is not suitable for large motorhomes and twin-axle caravans.
