Camping des Gaves

Set in a secluded valley, Camping des Gaves is a clean, small and well managed site, open all year, with very friendly owners and staff. It is set high in Pyrenean walking country on one of the routes to Spain and is only 30 km. from the Spanish border. There are 99 pitches including 43 level grassed touring pitches of which 38 are fully serviced (3/10A electricity, 2-pin plugs), numbered and separated; the remainder are used for seasonal units. Mature trees provide plenty of shade. The river runs alongside the site (well fenced) and fishing is possible. The busy little tourist town of Laruns is only a short walk.

This site has some dramatic views of the Pyrenees, particularly in the evening sunshine. It provides a good base for touring and walking but has little sports provision. The old towns of Eaux Chaude and Eaux Bonnes are a short but steep drive away, both are well known for their hot sulphurous springs. Eaux Bonnes also has a casino. A gentle hiking path on the plateau of Benou (9 km) takes you past three small and partially hidden Neolithic stone circles (cromlechs). The path also provides good views along the Valley d’Ossau. This is a tranquil site even in the peak season.

Facilities

The very clean toilet block can be heated in cool weather and has modern fittings. Washbasins for ladies in curtained cubicles and one shower in ladies’ suitable for showering children. Basic accessible facilities. Laundry room. Motorhome services. No shop but baker calls daily (July/Aug). Small bar with large screen TV, pool and video games (July/Aug). Larger bar with table tennis. Small play area. Boules. Volleyball. Fishing. Free WiFi. 16 mobile homes/chalets to rent.

Location

Take N134 from Pau towards Olorons and branch left on D934 at Gan. Follow to Laruns and just after town, turn left following signs to site. Note: the D918 to the east of Laruns is not recommended for large units.
