Alan Rogers Review of Burns Farm Caravan and Campsite
Burns Farm Caravan and Campsite is an all-year site which lies in the beautiful valley of St. St-Johns-in-the-Vale—an idyllic part of the Lake District. You just need to walk off the site in any direction, and it will not be long before a hill comes underfoot. From some of the highest ground in England to the loveliest walk on a disused railway line by the River Greta, this is one of the most incredible places to take your boots.
The nearest village is Threlkeld, 1 mile away, just off the A66. You will find tasty bar meals in three excellent pubs, perfect for a stroll out for an evening drink or refuelling worn-out walkers. There is also a golf course and cricket club boasting some of the best playing experiences in the UK, along with Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum, which has many fascinating features. The site has 60 grass or hardstanding pitches, half with electric hook-up point 16amp. There are also four bell tents available to hire. The site was featured on a recent Chanel 4 TV programme, “The Perfect Pitch”.
The scenic A591, which stretches 21 miles between Windermere and Keswick, takes in no less than six lakes – Windermere, Rydal, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake. It also includes some of the most impressive mountain scenery in the world, including Dunmail Raise, the glacial valley of St John’s in the Vale and the lower slopes of Helvellyn. Burns Farm is proud of Tewet Tarn, its little lake set amid the rugged undulating little tors of Low and High Rigg, with picturesque views of the Vale and the site with Skiddaw in the background.
