Alan Rogers Review of Aird Donald Caravan Park
Aird Donald is a good stopping off point when travelling to and from the Irish ferries, but it is also useful for seeing the sights around Stranraer. This tidy park comprises 12 acres surrounded by conifers, flowering trees and shrubs, and the 300-yard drive is lit and lined with well trimmed conifers. There are grass areas for caravans and tents, and hardstandings with electricity hook-up (these are very handy for hardy winter touring units). A small play area caters for young children, but the local leisure centre is only a walk away and provides swimming, table tennis, gym, bar and theatre that hosts everything from country and western to opera. The friendly owners, Mr and Mrs Cassie, made this campsite 53 years ago and keep it clean and well tended.
This is a popular site for Dutch and German visitors travelling to and from Ireland. The area has three world-famous gardens to visit, numerous golf courses, fishing, riding and watersports. For walkers, the Southern Upland Way (coast to coast) passes close to the site and starts seven miles away in Portpatrick. The unspoilt quiet country lanes are ideal for cyclists. Nearby Port Logan has a famous pond, where sea fish can be fed by hand.
Facilities at Aird Donald Caravan Park
Two toilet blocks, the newer block modern and heated. Kept very clean with excellent, tiled facilities, this one is kept locked with a key deposit of £5. There are two types of shower, an electric one which is metered (50p) and two others which are free (strange, because they are all excellent). Washbasins are in vanity units, ladies having one in a cubicle. Accessible sanitary Unit has a washbasin and WC. The original block has been renovated but is more basic with free showers and open all the time. Small laundry. Motorhome services. Play area. WiFi over part of site (charged).
