Gelderland

Once the scene of heavy fighting during WWII, Gelderland is now a province with much to offer the tourists in Achterhoek, Veluwe, Rivierenland, Arnhem and Nijmegen.

In the central region, you’ll discover a country offering a wide range of holiday options, from lively seaside resorts to picturesque villages, idyllic old fishing ports and areas where nature rules.

The Achterhoek is a region of forests, estates, castles, streams and picturesque villages, a perfect destination for the cyclist and the hiker. De Hoge Veluwe National Park is one of the Netherlands’ oldest and largest national parks, with no less than 5,500 hectares of woodland, heathland, lakes and drift sands. Together with the Kröller-Müller Museum and the sculpture garden, it is a unique alliance of nature, art and architecture. Rivierenland (Riverland) is a rural area that has developed around the traditional activities of farming and handicrafts. Many of the old mills, castles, fortifications and art galleries are well worth a visit.

The cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen have evolved from a fascinating and occasionally turbulent history. While they are located only 20 km. from each other, their attractions, shops, landscapes, culture and gastronomy couldn’t be more
different. Not surprisingly, there is great rivalry too, as you can see when their football clubs meet! Arnhem is a very green city with several parks and the estate of the Rosendaal Castle (former residence of the dukes of Gelre), while
Nijmegen is an ancient city where you can still glimpse remains dating from the Roman period to the Middle Ages.
