A former equestrian centre, this site has been developed and expanded with a heavily Wild West theme. There are totem poles and large wooden carvings around the site, the buildings have clapboard fronts, the toilet block is the old stables, the restaurant serves Tex-Mex food and the entertainment, in high season, consists of line-dancing, calf-roping, country and western concerts and western style riding lessons. Probably all great fun, as long as you visit in July or August and bring your Stetson, chaps and high boots. But outside the limited French holiday season, it is just a normal campsite with some unusual features and no amenities open, apart from the bar.

Otherwise, nothing opens until 1 July and everything closes again on 30 August. The site is very open, having lost all of its large trees in a major storm some years ago. A huge planting programme has been undertaken, but it will be some time before there will be any natural shade. Pitches are very large, on well tended grass and with good access on tarmac or gravel roads. Reception is in a corner of the Saloon, with lots of colourful western memorabilia and a friendly welcome. The site is halfway between Hourtin, a quite attractive little town and Hourtin Lac, a leisure development on the edge of the largest freshwater lake in France. Here there is fishing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and lots of other watery pursuits. Around the top of the lake you come to another Hourtin. Hourtin Plage is a small, quite newly-built, seaside resort with a superb beach.

Three toilet blocks, but only one open outside July/Aug. (not the old stables). These are adequate with washbasins in cubicles and pushbutton showers. Washing machine. Bar. Swimming pool. Tex-Mex restaurant and takeaway (July/Aug). Children’s entertainment (Club Papoose), western-style fun and games for the grown-ups (all July/Aug. only). Electronic games room (aka City Marshal’s Office). Manmade lake on site for fishing (not fenced).

Directions to Yelloh! Village Le Village Western

From north, take Royan-Le Verdon ferry then N215 south to Lesparre, then D3 to Hourtin. In Hourtin follow signs to Hourtin Port and site is 2 km. on left. From south take exit 8 from Bordeaux ring-motorway then D3 to Lacanau. Here go right to Carcans, then to Hourtin and follow as above.
