Alan Rogers Review of Vampire Camping
Bran Castle, most commonly known as Dracula’s Castle, was not built by Vlad Tepes (father of Vlad the Impaler) upon whom the novelist Bram Stoker is (incorrectly) supposed to have based his vampire, Count Dracula. The castle, perched atop a 60 metre peak in the village centre, was built by Saxons from Brasov in 1382 to defend the Bran Pass from Turks. Ideally located, Vampire Camping is a very good, Dutch owned, but locally managed, site opened in 2004. There are 40 pitches, all with 6A electricity, plus a separate area for tents.
Whatever its history, the castle makes an interesting visit since it was occupied for many years by the Romanian Royal Family as a summer residence. Inevitably the entrance is surrounded by souvenir stalls but there are some good restaurants locally as well.

Directions to Vampire Camping
Bran is 30 km. south of Brasov on the 73/E574. Entering the village from Brasov the site is signed and is just after the Wolf supermarket and a petrol station, on the right. A large bus shelter obscures the entrance and sign.
