Alan Rogers Review of Texelcamping De Shelter
Camping de Shelter, on the island of Texel, is an all year site. There are just 70 pitches here, set out on small fields, surrounded by clusters of trees. Pitches are large (min. 100 sq.m) and equipped with electricity (16A), water and drainage, with little shade. The emphasis here is on peace and quiet, so there are no organised activities, except for children’s entertainment in high season, shared with the sister site, Om de Noord, and relatively few amenities. Under 25s are not admitted unless accompanied by adults. The village of De Koog is within walking distance for shops and restaurants.
Texel is the biggest and most populated of the Frisian islands and there is a good ferry service from Den Helder (booking recommended). The dune landscape on Texel provides a unique habitat for wildlife and around a third of the island is a protected nature reserve. The island has an extensive cycle path network, as well as its own bus service. Den Burg is the largest of the island’s seven villages, and has an interesting historic centre.

One clean, modern toilet block has controllable, hot showers and some sinks in cubicles, two family shower rooms with baby bath,. Bread to order. Small playground. Boules. Football field. Children’s entertainment (high season). High speed WiFi (charged). Cycling paths from site.

Directions to Texelcamping De Shelter
Drive to Den Helder using A7 motorway. Directions to the ferry are clearly signed. On Texel, follow signs towards De Koog. Once in De Koog, continue until you see FC De Koog’s football field with a road to the left, which leads to the site.
