Alan Rogers Review of South Penquite Farm
South Penquite offers real camping with no frills. It is set on a 200-hectare hill farm, high on Bodmin Moor between the villages of Blisland and Saint Breward. The farm achieved organic status in 2001 and runs a flock of 100 ewes and a herd of 20 cattle and horses. The camping is small scale and intended to have a low impact on the surrounding environment. Fifty tents or simple motorhomes (no caravans) can pitch around the edge of three walled fields, roughly cut in the midst of the moor. You can find shelter or a view. Four yurts are available to rent in one field, complete with wood burning stoves – quite original. Campfires are permitted with wood available from the farmhouse.
You will also find horses, ponies, chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys which show their approval (or not) by the skin around their necks changing colour! A walk of some two miles takes you over most of the farm and some of the moor, taking in a Bronze Age hut settlement, the river and a standing stone. It is also possible to fish for brown trout on the farm’s stretch of the De Lank river, a tributary of the Camel. The farm’s website offers a fascinating insight into life and work at South Penquite.

Arts workshops. Fishing (requires an EA rod licence and tokens available from the West Country Rivers Trust). Dogs are not accepted.
